Ansel Adams called the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset "The Golden Hour". If you aren't familiar with Ansel Adams, do yourself a favor and Google the name. His black and white photographs of landscapes are amazing.

Better yet, if you get to Yosemite go to the Ansel Adams gallery and spend a few hours. The depth of the blacks and the iridescence of the highlights in his prints can't translate to digital, it doesn't do it justice.

I met Ansel Adams at the Yosemite gallery around 1980. A humble and gentle human being. One of the inspirations of my life.

The photo is at sunrise in northern Nebraska. A few hours later and it's just another bland landscape. Even the Texas Panhandle has drama during the Golden Hour. This is one reason why I like starting my day in the wee hours, to see another dramatic sunrise. Sometimes I will even trip plan to see sunrise at a particular place.

I don't take a lot of pictures. But I love the sights in the canadian rocky's. Craters of the Moon in Idaho was amazing and weird to drive beside. Some of the rest areas on I94 have some really nice sights behind them. Mostly just nice to find someplace quiet and relax.

There is so much to see! So much diversity in the world. I feel sorry for those drivers who don't MAKE the time to do a little sight seeing or relaxing along the way. Yeah, it does take some foresight and preplanning, but since preplanning is a big part of driving, it isn't too much of a stretch to preplan some of your off time.
I can see where a new driver could have some problems in doing this, but once you get comfortable with your job, then do something with your spare time.
Spending your 34, in the sleeper, watching TV or playing games might be OK for some. But I think they are missing out on some great opportunities to see this country. It really doesn't matter where you are, there is something interesting nearby. It may involve renting a car now and then. So just prepare for it.
