Ok, very good. It sounds like I should be on the right track: JPT school with GI Bill, no contract, company driver. Save up, buy trk, go O/O after a year or two of experience. I'm sure this tentative plan of mine will be heavily modified as I actually learn something about the business.

Hi,
29 year retired Air Force member who is also going that route and will graduate the end of this month. I chose to go to a driving school with a very good reputation vs getting my CDL in 3-4 weeks from a driver mill operation like Swift or C.R. England. The VA will pay your tuition and provide you with a monthly living stipend while in school. When you graduate, choose a company that has the VA OJT Apprenticeship program. Most trucking companies that have that program run it for 12 months. There are a very select group (Werner, Roehl, TMC) that run their program for 24 months. You will receive payouts from the VA which are 100% tax free since the pay is mostly based on BAS Rates. You can use the following link to search whether the company you are considering has the VA OJT Program and calculate what your benefits will be to the penny. Choose the type of GI Bill you are tapping into (Montgomery or Post-9/11) then type the name of the company in the window. After typing 3-4 letters a populated drop down menu should appear then click on the name of the company and it will calculate the benefit.
