Can anyone explain what it means to be a agent for a company?
Are they called freight agents as well?

No. Not without your own authority.
To be a company driver and agent of the company is a very limited scope. You are not allowed to hire your company issued truck to pickup freight.
To be a owner operator who IS the company.... with own authority can broker freight.
That is all I know. -
When it comes to a company (any company) an agent is someone who receives correspondence for that company. That's the basics of an agent for a [any] company.
When it comes to trucking, if you're setting up your authority, you need a process agent. This again, has nothing to do with freight; finding, assigning, etc.
Hope this helps... -
A little ...
For example..
ARL transport is a major trucking compnay ----
Nigel trucking is a agent for ARL transport that has about 5 truck that work for HIM
My question is can I go to ARL transport or any other compnay and become a agent to start a small business? -
I gotcha...
Yes, you can become an agent of a broker. From what I understand, this deals alot with sales... You're not just dealing with freight and truck drivers. You actually secure deals directly from shippers and then post those loads for drivers...
Here's a link for ya...

An agent is basically a broker, your just working with one or more companies under ther athority. If you can get freight and good freight. You wouldn't have a problem getting on with a trucking company.Generally paid on % of loads you get.
-
So far, I learned that freight brokers are licensed and freight agents are not
However they both work together/partnership for a similar purpose.
Freight agent gets a certain percentage of commission from the load.
@mr.erv
From what I understand
Let's a load pays 1000 from A-B(
(ARL keeps let's say 20%)
Nigel trucking get let's say 15%
the owner operator gets the remaining?
is it even worth it to work for a agent? -
I wouldn't think so unless you were interested in becoming an agent.Agents can do good if you get good freight and on with a good company. It all comes down to how good of a salesman you are.
