Say i get my CDL in Pennsylvania. I want to move to boise idaho. Can i use my PA cdl in idaho or another state? Im pretty much free to go to any state to pursue a trucking job and given my record that increases my chances. Does it matter which state you get your CDL i cant find the answer anywhere.

I have a CDL from a state I have never lived in and I have never had any issues being hired.

What they don't know, they don't know.....But, usually your State of "residence" is your CDL State, regardless of what State you "work" in....In other words, if you live in PA and work in ID, your CDL should be PA....Now, most States require you to obtain a CDL in the State where you moved to live (residence), usually within 30 days to 6 months, because it's unlawful to have CDL's in multiple States....Years ago, guys would sometimes hold a "deck of cards" of various State licenses, but that's a topic for another time...I'm hearing that some States (MA comes to mind) won't even accept another State CDL without going through their States requirements too....Live in the truck with no State residence?....Some guys just get a PO Box in whatever State they want......Hope that answers your question...

Yes you are supposed to have your cdl I your state of residence , can you get by with not having it yes sure you can , but if by chance you get pulled over in your home state with an n out of state cdl and you give them an I state adress they will most likely ask how long you have lived at said adress if it is past their 30 or 60 day transfer period they can simply issue you a ticket or in extreme cases suspend your license

Also something to consider , I'll use prime as an example here , when you go through their cdl program they give you a letter of residency to get a missouri license no big deal you simply transfer it back to your state on your first home time.
Here's is what has happened to guys in the past they don't transfer their cdl back to their home state so now missouri shows you as a resident ( because you can't hold a missouri license without being one ) and they come after you for state income tax and now you are paying taxes in 2 states

You will have a Pennsylvania CDL until such time as you establish residency in another state. Driving for a company in another state, by itself, does not establish residency in that state.

So technically, you can do what ever without consequences.

Care to share how you can live in two places at the same time? Just wondering cause the man issuing the certificate of death needs to know where to file your papers.....:D
