On eBay you used to could get a little solar panel that had suction cups on top so you could put it under the windshield facing up, plug it into the cigarette lighter and it maintained the battery. They come in off the ships with loads of VW's and Audi's. I think I paid $40.00.

I'm curious as to how you can maintain a battery by plugging in a solar panel or whatever in to the cig lighter socket.
My socket doesn't have a connection to the electrical system unless the ignition is turned on. -
On all older vehicles the cigarette lighter worked without a key,

It can be very expensive but I got myself one of those things that keeps the car running fine. It is called a wife. Just make sure it gets plenty of exercise or it will get fat.

If leaving a vehicle un-attended for a few weeks at a time I would un-hook the battery negative cable. If you want to get really creative, just install an isolation switch on the ground. That way instead of having to hook up and unhook the battery all the time, you can just pop the hood and turn the switch.

If the same gas is going to sit in the tank more then 6 months then put some stabil in the tank. I use the solar charger as well if my ford is gonna sit for over 3 weeks. Just sit the solar panel on the dash and plug it into the cigarette lighter and no more problem. I think i paid around $50 for the charger. I would not recommend disconnecting the battery on a newer vehicle. If your driving an old car then go right ahead.

Yeah, those little solar panels that plug into cigarette lighter port, or wired to battery, are called solar battery maintainer.
Thanks -
Sweet.
