I'll have a truck, I'm approved by lone mtn, approved by landstar, just putting together the final money, I expect orientation approx 15 aug, 40 years exp, had a truck and trlr back in late 90's, lost my butt, gonna run van around the northeast to get my money together, then I'll buy a step and tell get down to biz

I find these threads really interesting, a lot of people grumbling, but it could be worse, myself I live in the truck when I'm in the u.s.a., but I have a wife and young son in vietnam, so I take my time off there. I would think that you could get the best rates doing short haul within 500 mi of n.y.c., in a dry van. While that is not my preferred run, I'm more so about getting my biz off the ground and making money, then my preferences at this time, any suggestions?

I avoid NYC and New England because I have found that the rates do not cover the tolls. I do pull a van. The best rates are in the Midwest so you'll probably make the best money running in and around the Midwest. Keep in mind it generally takes 6 months to learn the system so be prepared to stick it out. Things could suck at first. They did for me but I'm glad I stuck it out. I love it now.

That's the most interesting item I've heard today, cuz. I had her run scenarios at the board demo for jersey city in a 500 mi radius for van and saw numerous loads that paid from 10.00 a mi up to 28.00 a mi, don't mean it's like that all the time, but I've set my bar really low, like 450 a week, to cover trk payment and ins...I guess I'll find out soon enough, cuz I'm so old I only get 1 more shot at this, thx for the info

Yeah if your dead set on just staying in the Northeast and live like that (little debt etc) sure you will be fine. I can tell you about tolls because I rarely( 2 times the past 9 years) go above Jersey but, its hit and miss coming out of the upper northeast(north of say NY/CT line) From Baltimore going north you can and always should get a good rate for van. I wouldn't limit myself to just the NE though. You can easily run NE to Midwest and find loads back to the east coast in time to get you home every weekend.

Not trying to discourage you but just letting you know what you're up against... If you wanna a lane to run, I would just stay in the Midwest. Less traffic, better rates and not as much capacity. Have fun in the winter thoBro_Dave Thanks this. -
