    This is the situation.

I am a truckers wife. I made a seat organizer for my husband. Customized just for him, perfectly fitting his seat, with all sorts of special pockets for everything he needs to be right at hand. He showed it to a fellow trucker - who liked it and wanted one for himself. So I made him one. Then, the fellow trucker showed it to another fellow trucker who wanted one too. So I made him one. Now I have two other drivers that are interested!

So my question naturally is, can I make a business out of this? Would truckers really want organizers for their seats? Not the cheap foreign made ones. But ones made with them in mind with lots of care?

Any comments would be much appreciated!

PS I am not posting this with the intention to solicit. Just honest consideration.

I've seen a similar product available at truckstops . Forum rules prevent showing it here for comparison . But you could make a few and have your husband carry them with him to see if anyone was interested .

You sure can, Lets say it cost you 15$ in materials I would charge 25$ your getting back what you paid in materials and making a 10% dollar profit..

This sounds like it could become a decent home based business, in the short term and might even grown into a full fledged operation. Keep it small to start out with and see where it goes.

You might contact a local truck stop (or several) and see if they are interested in carrying them. You will have some competition, but so what, that is what makes business keep improving.

I wish you the best of luck with this!

I for sure would be interested if the pockets and the like were on the *sides* of the seats. On the back of the seat - even the passenger seat- is more of a PITA than it's worth.
'm happy with the logs and truck stop guide in the door pocket, but chasing down my keys, wallet, locks, camera, gloves, atlas, phone, laptop, CD cases, forms and the like is a pain- and they're all within arm's reach

Most seat covers just don't last with the constant use of a truck... It would need to be made of a very durable material...

    absolutely.

    Say - seat cover material?

    Or 20oz denim might work.

Wow, I didn't know there were so many replies!

When my husband started driving I went with him to his terminal to help him clean and set up his truck. Thats when we got the idea that he needed an organizer. So I took a garbage bag and fitted it over his seat and marked it with a sharpie. What I put together came from my fabric stash. It is twill on the front and back with a strong black stretchy fabric on the sides to make it fit the seat snug. It is very custom. My husband likes to put his cooler behind his passenger seat, so I put pockets on the top back for silverware and some other stuff. On the front, there are upper pockets for pens note pad and I think glasses too. then on the bottom front I made two large pockets with elastic to hold his atlas and clipboards. oh and I did make a side pocket on the black stretchy stuff for his mp3 remote.

Well after I made my husbands, he showed it to a co-worker who wanted one except that he likes to put his cooler on the seat so he had me put certain pockets on the front top and bunch on the back.

Then another co-worker saw his and she wanted one just like his with a few extra custom details.

So now I am making them with a beige colored rip-stop cotton similar to army fatigues just not camo. with the same stretchy fabric for the sides. I believe it is strong. At least I know rip-stop is durable.

I couldn't compete with the $15 ones because I put a lot of time into them. I dont whip them out - I carefully plan out the pockets and I double stitch the corners and bar tack the openings. I do everything I can to make them last and not fall apart. I charged the last person $50. I don't like to applaud my self but I am not a sloppy seamstress. I run my own alterations business and work on heavy things like carhartts, leather, and tents etc. so I know how to sew sturdy.

so even though I might need to charge more I know it would be a quality made product that wasn't made in a hurry in a sweat shop for pennys.

I also thought that if I let people customize them for a little while I could learn what truckers need and then I could standardize a few styles.

    There,
There is a little more info about them.
Think I should start a webpage to post pics? :)
I do sorta hope they take off but I thought you guys were the ones to ask if you would even want them.

Well the sweat shop people are who you will be competing with and many times they too make a decent product. And keeping it on the low down for prices for a while until the side biz takes off could really help in attracting new customers...because we know drivers can't shut up about stuff they like.

Anywho...I think in order to keep it easy on you...go around a truck stop for a day, offer a discount to drivers who let you hop in their truck for a few and get the basic measurements for the different OEM seats. That way each seat doesnt need to be custom. And if the seat IS custom, then you can charge a higher price.

    Just thinking of stuff here:
*keep the fabric very breathable, even though it needs to be durable at the same time...last thing a driver needs or wants is a case of swassy bass or monkey butt.
*dont just limit yourself to seats, but expand a bit and maybe make other covers...ie...dash covers and such. I know my freightliner doenst have any convenient place to hold a pen or other handy gizmos...it would be neat if there was a cloth cover for the dash that hung over a few inches where I could put some pens and other items, along with a hole for the defroster vent...maybe it would need to be weighted slightly to keep it in place...I dunno. Or you could make grommets so the screws could be taken out and the cover could be screwed in place.

Just keep on thinkin...I myself am thinking about something with the truck as well, making an aftermarket product, actually its two things...but I dont know how to sew or anything else handy which would actually help make the product, lol.
