Thank you for your compliment. I grew up in the towing business, owned two different tow companies, managed a few more and come from Pennsylvania so I am very versed in their laws. I get upset when someone is taken advantage of by a tower, there are many honest and hardworking towers/garages throughout the world but a few bad apples ruins the image of a whole industry. I personally have never had a bad experience with J.E. Herring, I did buy one of their old trucks in 2002 and was happy with it, but other than that I know little about them.

Good luck with your truck, it sucks to have a bad experience this early on, hopefully you have some cash in reserve. Not to pick on you personally, but this is why I strongly advise new owners not to get into a truck until they have a large cash reserve, usually at least $10,000. Live and learn, hopefully someone else will learn from your misfortune and avoid the same trouble.

Also the bill was actually reasonable and has already been paid. It ran 600 dollars to go 5 mi back to their shop. I have a car hauler and PA law requires split tow for stinger mounted carriers. As far as I could calculate that was fair enough.

By the way where would I find the law that requires shops to have the signed authorization for work? Thanks that can lend a huge help in my case.

    Terry270 Thanks this.

Very fair, and it is not just for stingers it is for any combination. Pa law only allows combinations to be towed to the nearest point of safety where they must be split, this is usually the closest exit ramp, rest area, or in some cases even just a wide spot on the shoulder.

That $600 tow in my area, outside of Scranton, would have been closer to $1,500 to split and tow a stinger, so you got a real good deal on the tow part.

My first thought would put me in jail for sure.
My second would be to burn down their shop regardless of my truck being inside.
After cooling off I would probably just fill the front driver of the very tow truck that hauled yours in with gravel through the fill plug.
Crooks, liers and cheats deserve nothing less.
If every one got sent a clear message the world would be a better place in a big hurry.

Acting on impulse makes things worse as tempting as it is. It helps to step back and think for a moment. Then direct that rage in the right direction.

Very true. A simple misunderstanding is one thing. But a outright, premeditated, trying to screw me over and hide behind the law is a whole different deal.
If I was in your situation I can promise you one thing. My truck is coming out of that shop one way or another.
$3,000 labor to pull a front diff apart? That's insane.
The axle shafts would be under the bunk and the housing strapped across the frame rail.
Pay to have it reassembled? What the **** for?
If they can't agree to a fair labor rate for taking it apart then it's war.

Didn't see this until after my truck was brought in to herrings but my experience was not the same. Truck started knocking ( never a good sign ) on the turnpike and I was getting towed to a Mack dealer ( mines a KW ) here in somerset but they would not be able to even look at it until Monday. The service guy said let me try herrings and they said he could look at it today. Had truck towed there, they dropped oil pan and number one rod bearing was mostly in the bottom of the pan. Mechanic said he thinks it took out the crank. Knowing that I'm looking at a out of frame, I told them to reinstall pan. Total bill was about 160.00 for them looking at it. I'm going to have a Freind come up here next weekend from lower Alabama with a fifth wheel boom to tow it home. Bill even states truck can stay on their lot until the 31st without storeage fees. I intend to have it gone a lot sooner but it's nice to have that breathing room.
