the new Detroits are a whole different animal than our old ones. Same fuel economy...only better...but a whole lot more stout. In the mountains the new Detroits pull better than our ISXs...and that is impressive.

There are so many things wrong here i dont know where to begin. First of all a 430 detroit will do fine in the mountains, the "turbo boost" wont get "hot" and you didnt blow 3 turbos because you ran them hot. They will get hot, and are designed to see 1200*F on the exhaust, unless you lugged the crap out of the engine and got it past 1200*F somehow. Which is impossible with a stock detroit as they are really idiot proof and ecm will shut you down before you hurt it. Reason why you had so many issues with turbos is DRIVER ERROR.

no driver era !"my boss was mad as hell because we had 3 trucks in less than a year break down on the road because of turbos going out , i personally broke down on the road with the turbo going out . my boss had the truck toed to the nearest Detroit service center instead of freight liner service center to get it fixed. they down loaded information data from my trucks computer.after about 3 hours siting the waiting for the truck the service manager told me to come to the service desk the manager there said that the turbo was working to hard i was told this by the service manager .the manager called my boss and told my boss over the phone as i stood there that he recommended turning the trucks up and change the rear gear which would help pulling threw the mountains. when your pulling heavy loads threw places like the gap 80,000 in 3 or 4Th gear you put a lot of strain on the engines and the turbos the manager said.

Service managers are there to make appointments, not give you advice about truck engines as 99% of them are clueless. The engine wont run any hotter in 3rd or 4th and neither will the turbo, 25psi is 25psi no matter what gear you are in. If anything it will get a better work out in top gear as you are putting a lot more load on the engine, the service manager you talked to IS an idiot.

I agree with you on the driver error, the one thing about this new fleet trucks is that they don't spec. them right for instance most new fleet trucks sold dont come with pyro or turbo boost guages or any other temp guages. I'm old school without a pyro or boost guage I'm kinda lost, at least on the peace of mind side.As alot of guy's would agree with me ,you can tell alot about how the truck is running just by monitoring your guages. Some drivers think having all those guages is a novelty when actually my opinion having them it's a must.

The Challenger and 550hpW900L Thank this.

Agreed. My truck (FL Classic, S60 430/500 "uncorked") has a boost guage but no pyro. I've been contemplating installing one, especially as it likes to run hot.

    The Challenger Thanks this.

Well I would be like that too as the 7, 8, or 9 gauges that come with fleet trucks don't cut it. A warning is simply not enough for my liking as I need to know wth is going on and if I ever bought a used fleet truck ( I may do so in the next couple years), a new full gauge package would be in order for me. I prefer the eye strain over a breakdown cost any day.

It could be driver error and you dont even know it, proper turbo pre cautions as in letting the turbo cool down before shut down, not getting off the throttle instantly surging the turbo etc. Not letting it cool down properly is the biggest issue here.
