Can you get on with a local dump truck or something similar? Or are they asking for 6months min. too?

 

South Florida is not necessarily the problem. I have almost 3 years experience pulling gypsy wagons which is much more than 3 years old. Recently, I decided to come back to driving, so I picked up a book, took the tests, got a truck, rented a trailer, went to the DMV for a road test, and now have a new CDL.

"New" seems to be the relevant word here. I've only found 1 company willing to lease me on with what is "little or no recent" experience. This may be the only industry I've seen in my business experience where if you jump out and stay out for any length of time, you will ultimately have to pay your dues a second time in some form or other.

Now, this is not to say you can't become an O/O from the start or can't get hired by others. There are companies that will hire you on, get you behind the wheel, and allow you the seat time you need to move into areas of operation you want. The problem with those companies I seem to always find is they usually seem to be offering everything I don't want except the seat time.... hence the dues paying once again. I only know one person here, who started out an O/O and remains that way today.

If getting hired is the problem, you may have to look at it from a different perspective and pay your dues for a while, as I suspect I will ultimately have to pay again, unless you have the cash to drop on your own Authority, Filings, Truck, Trailer, Insurance, Operating Capital, and can find your own customers or don't mind the hassle of finding a few good Brokers to get started. Either way you go, there will be dues payment involved. With three to six months, recent, and verifiable experience, you can start moving into better positions if you keep your nose clean. At one years experience, it gets better. At eighteen to twenty-four months, a clean MVR, and no problems with DAC, you can go just about any direction you want.

 

It really not the Industry that is causing that, it more of an Insurance Issue what I am seeing. For yes I am in the same boat so to speak after taking 7 years off. But I never gave up my CDL's. What helps me I guess, is I have to renew mine in 3 months now.
