If your end goal is your own authority someday Landstar is the way to go. It's as close as you can get to it, while still running under their numbers. I still have a big issue with their agents being able to outsource and BCO's not being able to, but I'm sure you can make money there.

How much of a money difference are we talking about?

For me to do flatbed and mess with tarps I better be averaging at least an extra .50 a mile to make it worth the extra bs.
My normal weeks are 2300-2800 miles a week $1.70- $2 a mile. When in the Northeast i can still sometimes hit around 2 all miles but it sucks doing so... you know the 2-3 loads a day in traffic and fighting for parking.
All what I do is about to change tho but I am saying nothing on here yet.

So I spoke with SFI about lease options today, and this is what they are offering at the moment with no negotiations:
    1 Year
    Used Freightliner @ 0 down
New Freightliner, TriPac w/10 speed manual @ $4k down, TriPac w/DT12 auto @ $5k down

    3 year
New Freightliner w/TriPac, either Trans @ 0 down OR KW T680 "Advantage" for 0 down
    Premium trucks(KW, Pete, Volvo)w/TriPac $7k down.

Was set on going with a Freightliner, but with that 0 down on the KW "Advantage", I'm trying to decide. LOVE T680s, but the experiences I've heard from some of you, as well as others I've spoken to, I'm scared to put faith in a MX13.

This keeps you pretty up to date on the numbers you are asking about. http://www.dat.com/resources/trendlines

In the end, total net profit, flatbed operations tend to make more money. I think the numbers from ATBS showed (for 2014), the average net profit for flatbed was around 60k, van at round 54k, and reefer at 52k. Obviously, this doesn't take into consideration all the operations out there, only the ones using ATBS, but it gives you an idea.

I'm currently looking over all the numbers I can find because I am seriously considering moving up my planned time to get my own authority, and I'm trying to dig up all the info I can on reefer and dry van.

It's there "economy package", similar to the EVO Cascadia. Didn't get too much in depth info on how they're specd since I originally had no interest in them, but it's been on my mind all day...I love KWs, but don't trust those MX engines. So the question is, crap truck with a decent power train(Crapcadia with D15/DT12), or nice truck with a crap drivetrain(T680 with MX)? Sorry KW guys lol
