Rookies training rookies. What a recipe for a disaster. And yet these companies just keep churning out the newbies, and chewing up the drivers who might be interested in staying long enough to learn to be a good mentor.

My trainer at a mega over 7 years ago had over 2,000,000 miles under his belt.
Most of what I needed was to learn how the system worked in the company as far as procedures, etc. Everything else after that was just a matter of time behind the wheel.
The school I went to for my CDL had an older retired boy from N.C. with over 2,000,000 miles too. He was great in teaching me the importance of setting up in the right gear and utilizing the jakes BEFORE you head down a steep grade.
We had plenty of practice as I live in Oregon and we were able to utilize that skill many times by driving through the hills in our area with weighted drums in the 48' trailers we pulled.
Most of what we do in a big rig is just using common sense and exercising courteous practices...
Like anything else in life, the HOW TO(s) come with repetition. And even after you think you know it all, there comes those humbling moments when it takes 5 pull ups to back straight into an open dock with no one around and 200' of clearance in front of youLast edited: Sep 4, 2016

Actually it's much more humbling when the whole dock crew is standing around watching you make those pull ups. And there is nobody that has been driving any were near a year, that this hasn't happened too.
