They told us in our orientation to take the hazmat test (and security screen) now, so that by the time we get out of class we'll have it. And thoughts on that?

RJparker,
Here in upstate NY you have to score at least 80% to pass and the backround check fee which includes the price of the test is $143.00 . The Haz Mat manual for NY is only 10 sections 34 pages long and most of the pages have very little reading and mostly charts. I don't see why It should be a problem. I do understand , I myself don't absorb things like I once did. As of this posting I am studying for mine now. I'm just studying little by little. I am trying to get on with Crete and they agreed that if they hire , They will take me without Haz Mat as long as I was to obtain the endorsement before 45 days with the company had ended. Just take your time and read it over and over. If you read the Haz Mat manual for your state over and over it will eventually sink in. The test here in NY anyways is multiple choice and not very long if I remember right . All that changed here in NY is them doing a state and federal back round check and finger printing. I was told by the DMV the test is the same as it's always been. Anyways I hope this helped ... God bless you ! -
I'm a student and got my TSA approval already. Is it worth my time to go and take the test with DMV now, or wait until I finish school and take the test then? I just thought if I get my HazMat, Tanker, and Doubles/Triples endorsement it's put me ahead of the game.

i just did mine 2 weeks ago. read the book 3 times and only got to 23 ?'s and was done. ( 30 question test and allowed 7 wrong) very easy if you read the book. you need to get your TSA letter first. mine took 2 1/2 week to get here. good luck! youll do fine!

I just recently took mine, Id let my HM lapse, but my hubby and I are going back out on the road again after a two year break (Starting on Sept. 8th, and I'm so hyped!)
I was really stressing about it, but it turned out to be easier than I expected.
One thing that I always had trouble remembering was the order that the information was supposed to be on the shipping papers, but I finally came up with a mnemonic device to remember it:
It supposed to be Proper Shipping Name, Hazard Class, UN identification number, in that order... if you think of it as Name, Rank, Serial Number it makes it easier to remember the right order.Twicebit Thanks this. -
What I did to take the tests was this, I was never good at study so... I just read that section once a day for a week, took a few days off then went and took the tests the next week. Worked like a charm. I just took my permit tests and got them all but hazmat, and I didnt even study for some of them.
I find its easier to read it, then let yourself "forget" about it, so you're not second guessing yourself, I dont know it works for me -
Someone had suggested to me to look at a website that you can find by googling crist cdl online testing. It has a bunch of tests that you can take online for free and the questions and answers are very similar to the actual tests. I gotta say, some of the questions are almost funny if you have any common sense.

You're still smart enough to realize that.
From what I'm reading, it all depends on which state you take the test in. California's Haz-Mat test is a killer. It even asks questions that require additional qualifications to haul certain materials. Just a Haz-Mat isn't enough.
Also, check your test afterward if you've missed any questions. When I've taken tests here in the Land-0-Fruits and Nutz, I've discovered questions I've answered correctly marked as wrong. When I called that to the DMV's attention, their response was, What's the big deal? You passed anyway.
Go figure.
I reckon it never occurred to them that the NEXT guy or gal, might miss one too many questions, and that might be one of them.
Good luck!
Keep us posted?
(We know you can do it.)
