Does anyone else prefer manually airing up their trailer tires instead of the auto inflating ones?

I drive on a dedicated account with about 30 drivers. Most of our trailers you have to check and air up the tires yourself but in the last year we have gotten a few of those ones that auto inflate.

They were nice at first. The last two times I was assigned I was assigned one of these new trailers I had a blowout after less than a hundred miles. That is twice in a row, no exaggeration.

Today I had one of these trailers again and soon as I start the thing up I hear the Low Air Alarm going off. So I get out trying to find which tire is bad but hard to do since you cannot really gauge any of them without removing the air lines installed. Finally found a bolt stuck in one and go to get it repaired.

After about two hours it is all fixed and I roll out of the shop only to hear the alarm going off again and come to find out another trailer tire is also bad and so I just drive right back around to the entrance again and start the whole thing over again.

I have not had a blowout on a regular tire for at least two years. I have seen plenty of times where the alarm is going off and the driver just waits for the tire to fill up and them drives off, that is likely why every time I get one of these trailers something is going to be messed up about it.

I love having the auto inflate systems. They've saved me a service call at least twice. Tire completely off the rim both times. Of course the auto inflate doesn't work so hot if the tires are garbage.

There is a special place in hell for the companies who convince fleet managers that those things need to be on their trailers.

No kidding. I'm a no nonsense type driver. Not one of these "captain pretrip" type fellas you see on here. Nail in the tire? Let that auto inflate pump that tire up and let's roll. What the problem is? It's not going to deflate. Them wheels ain't turnin I ain't earnin :Driver:

I love auto-inflation system. However we don't put garbage tires on, either. They extend tire life significantly for both small and larger fleets. Sounds like you have a problem with bad luck. Not the auto-inflation system. I'd say you owe the system an apology.

HAHAHA some of the replies are pretty funny. Your problem is less with the system and more with the drivers that pulled the trailers before you.....pretty sure the system isn't meant to run forever on a leaky tire. As for finding the leaky one, maybe try some washer fluid in a spray bottle?

we too run dedicated accounts. we have auto-inflate as well, and we love'em too. i had a bolt in a trailer tire as well, but no blow out. we run at night, so the tires do not heat up as much as say daytime running in all that heat and humidity.

got the tire switched out, when i got back in the AM.

Why, Rank? Why do you always have to come on here and post stuff that makes sense?

I swear, one of these days, something on your old rig is gonna break, and you're just gonna fix it yourself and keep rolling, and probably not even post about it on TTR.

People like you just get my goat....
