Please explain to a non-mechanic why the Cat service guy told us that since we have a 1650lbs tranny, that boosting hp above the 475 the motor is now at would not be effective.
He indicated that he would gladly set the 2005 ACERT C15 to 500.........but it would not be an effective increase since the tranny is 1650lbs. (The decal on the side of the engine says it can go to 550).
Is there some coordination within the ECM that must occur to get torque to the tranny?
He did NOT say that boosting the hp would be harmful to the tranny........merely that it would be ineffective.
Thanks.
Changing horsepower and effective torque to the tranny.......

he has his head up his ........! unless you have an automatic tranny and there is something there I don't know about. THe simple fact is cat has issues uping HP, they just don't liek to do it. there is no reason that trans won't hold the torque unless you are some rookie driver out to tear it up. But that is what they will tell you.
I have no explanation for why he is saying it would be inefective. 1650 doesn't mean it limits output to 1650, it means that's the max torque the trans is rated for. -
Man i bet im turning 2700lbs of torque through a 1850 18 speed, no issues. They probably meant going to 500hp from 475 would be pointless, and he is right since you wont feel the power.
If you still have warranty on the trans then leave it, but once it runs out set it to 550hp and 1850lbs. -
I ASSUMED that the tranny is set by factory at its max torque capacity.
I also thought, like was mentioned earlier, that the 1650 (in this case) was the maximum torque that tranny could handle.
Are you saying that the tranny itself could be "set" to 1850.........or that the ECM would be set to 1850 for the tranny in order to allow the setting of the hp higher than the 475, ie making the ECM think the tranny can take more??
I am not familiar at all with what the ECM can be set to, etc. etc.
Thanks. -
Another option, if you want to be safe, is to program the engine to 550 in the last two gears. Cat will usually have no problem doing that, and if you look on the Roadranger website, they state that it won't void the warranty; (on certain models).
When Cat overhauled my '96 3406E, they offered to do this, knowing I had a 1650 tranny. -
Droy is right on the money, im sure if i got on it in the lower gears and saw full boost with 80k lbs in 3rd id be picking up parts.

Cat will NOT rate above the trransmission input rating. One too many folks have taken them to court for a new trans when some "steering wheel holder" Cobbed on it in the lower gears.

As I also previously stated;
If you go to the Eaton/Fuller Roadranger site you can read a statement saying that on SOME models, an uprate of horsepower in the last two gears WILL NOT void their warranty. The Kenworth dealer in Lafayette,LA, and Fort Worth TX. and also as I mentioned, the local Cat dealer here, and Reserve, LA all stated they could and would do that kind of engine uprate. The International dealer here in L.C. LA, also stated they would do it pending an OK from the Cat people, which I have not had to ask for, (getting a full 550 uprate from another source).Last edited: Feb 28, 2009
