How often do you have to do a mental reset to keep from quitting?

About once a week something gets under my skin so bad that I feel like turning my truck in and looking for another company.

Sometimes it's the receivers, sometimes the shippers; more often than not its dispatch

A nights sleep usually changes my tune. Sometimes it takes a weekend off.

Picturing my wife and kid keep me from reacting to a lot of stuff that if I were single would've had me abandoned truck, told a receiver to piss off, or told dispatch where to go.

How often do you need that mental reset?

I can relate to what you are saying. Over the 53 years that I spent in the transportation business, I understand where you are coming from. And I will admit that I did let my emotions get the best of me too many times. I have never been a type of person who would allow someone to "jerk my chain", but as I look back over the years, I wished that I had "kissed some #####" instead of "walking off". During my life, I have had some super jobs, but on the other end, I have had some "bottom of the barrel" jobs. The very first driving job that I ever had, back in 1963, I have wished a thousand times that I had stayed with it. My advice to you, if you consider the job that you have a half-way decent job, with fairly good wages, decent benefits, good equipment, good home time and a company that treats you like a human being, stick with it. There ain't too many companies like that left in the trucking business, I know, I have tried far too many of them.

I wish I could mentally reset, but I lost all my mentals awhile back. Nothing left to reset.

That's why I never agree with guys who say they stay out months and months. Ya gotta get that reset in your mind once in a while. Even trucking at a good company can wear on ya a little or a lot, some days.

The only advice I could give is do those things in reverse order. Look for the other job before you turn in your truck at this one. Oh, and don't ever abandon a truck. That's almost frowned on worse than anything. Rollover accidents, a DUI, and a failed urinalysis test are the only 3 things that come to mind that are looked on as bad as an abandonment.

My mental resets take place every weekend. I just know some day my lotto numbers are gonna hit so I don't have to work anymore. Hah
