When I was in school we had 3 or 4 students and one instructor when out driving. I never heard so much gear grinding in my life.
When I went to take the driving test to get my license, I had a little trouble shifting, but they know people arent gonna be perfect that early in the game and they will cut some slack.

    I wouldnt switch schools.

    Which state are you in?
Since the government is paying for the school, finish it. After graduation, if you're still uncomfortable witha stick shift, then hire on with a company that runs automatics.

Best video to explain shifting. Just remember its all about timing and finesse. Upshifting don't take your rpms over 1400 on the low side, on the high side you can wind the rpm's 1500 and go a little higher for 8-10. Downshifting you generally have a +5mph to get it in the next lower gear. You just have to rev the rpm's a little higher for the shifter to fall in.

Don't sweat it. Just practice the best you can. Eventually you'll get a feel for it. Even at the end of the course and during your test you may grind a gear once in awhile. Just wont be as bad as your first week. Whatever you do don't force the shifter to go in. Also never push the clutch to the floor unless your fully stopped. Reason I say that is because on top of the emission sensor issue we had with the truck the clutch brake finally gave out right at the end of our 7 weeks of driving. Was just a lot of wear and tear these trucks endure from new students.

The road test is probably the easiest part of the test. Tell school director about your issue. Biggest problem my student have is pushing the clutch to far in. You want to stay out of the clutch brake while shifting. Remember just tap the clutch soon as you feel resistance after the free play is all you need. Two steps clutch to neutral then clutch in the gear. Low side 1000 1200 rpm shift Hi side 1500. Here in georgia if you don't double clutch the max points they can give you is 5pts max. 30and under pass. Good luck stay positive.

Ten motions, double clutch shifting up from 3 to 8 to get up and moving then back up to 35-ish. It feels like a goofy little dance.

You will learn shifting. Unless you want to be marked with a license endorsement making sure you are a push button automatic user being paid less than actual honest to goodness drivers who learned a manual.

A manual is easy. When she quits pulling in a gear, any gear, it's time to take the next gear. Three heartbeats and a pause before you get the next gear up without shoving the fuel pedal for Rpms will get you there. Click, pause, click.

Now downshifting... when she quits pulling and starts lugging too much, you come out of the gear, pause, kick your fuel pedal a heartbeat, then grab the next gear down before the rpms fall off too much.

Remember your shifting depends both on your engine speeds up or down and also your drive wheel road speed.

Eventually when you have mastered shifting, you will discover the sweet joy of shifting without a clutch at all. click, click click click... walk off.

never give up. never. Unless you wish to be stamped a non-trucker with a restriction banning you to just Auto matic push button trucks.

Shifting is important.. watching others is also VERY important.. time trying and watching in a combination that just being forced to sit there and grind things all day.. its good to observe.. being first is not a lot of fun when a new skill is added to the mix. Shifting will come. The first few hours is horrible and clumsy for everyone... no matter which super trucker tells you different
