Change? Sounds like beeg $$ to me!! I can well see where cruising the nation's highways would appeal to you. So pay is not your top concern.

I'm pretty darn critical of Gordon for low pay and peewee runs, but here's a company with great equipment, CSA scores in the 20's straight across, great driver support 24/7, a lease program available after six months (so you can take whatever time off you want) with 3-year, million mile warranty on engine, transmission and rear-end, a really good learning environment especially if you can spend some time with a Gordon trainer.

Check out Gordon's CSA (Pacific, WA); it's the kind of starter carrier despite being a mega that might be good for you to consider. Schneider with all their terminals with showers and driver facilities another. I drove for Gordon for five months and I'm not letting them forget the lousy pay. But, like you, I'm in a different position, no debt, own my property and vehicles free and clear and some early Social Security. Made more $$ before and since Gordon.

Uh, as long as $$ are not a big objective, a starter like Gordon might work for you. Unfortunately, military recruiters have nothing on trucker recruiters--as you'll find here on TTR--in the lies (or wrong) department. "Oh, he shouldn't have told you that. Not up to him." Ha-ha. Guarantee you'll hear it.

I'm kinda parked lately at Surfer Joe's thread (with his approval): http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...drivers/169873-otr-pay-poverty-wages-146.html

And have a home at my own thread: http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...on-culture-one-drivers-experience-gordon.html

Not trying to discourage you, but getting hired to the best company, with the best pay, If there is such a thing (LOL), with no experience, will be a long shot, None of the training companies pay all that well, And PLEASE PLEASE don't fall for the Lease deal, claim you can make X amount of dollars, no matter what their drivers tell you! just doesn't happen for the most part, good luck and be safe

I'm 65 and although I've been at it 44 years but I see a lot of older people getting involved. This nude try doesn't have age restrictions.

I happen to be 5'2" AND female and have NO issue reaching the pedals or seeing over the dash board. I also handle city driving and backing just fine, so drop the condescension about female or shorter drivers.

Lilbit, thanks for the info.Do you drive alone or as a team.My wife is a little nervous about driving and I'm trying to get as much info as I can for her. She is really good at driving in general and I think she will do great but hearing from other women seems to help out.

    Thanks

Currently driving team with my hubby, which is the only way I will team. I did drive solo when I first started though. I do like driving team with hubby, since it gives us both someone to talk to that we can actually tolerate for one. There are plenty of other advantages to teaming with the spouse, including having an extra set of eyes at times and someone else to hit the dock if you are having a "Monday" when it comes to backing! We all have those.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this, but it gets a bit hectic at times, and I don't always get on here as often as I'd like. Currently sitting at home due to the cold weather and the effects it has on my back. I just had surgery a bit over a year ago, and the cold weather affects me more now than it did before the surgery. We are in the low teens, single digits and even below zero where we live.

I love being out there on the road, and even though it takes some time to get comfortable out there, it's worth it all!

Thanks for the reply, I have been on here asking all sorts of questions and reading a lot of other people's post. I don't think my wife is ready to start driving yet. We have been talking about me getting my training and then go solo and she will ride along with me.Then later on maybe she will drive but we are ok if she just rides along to keep me company.
Been real cold over here in Korea also, the other night out on the flight line it was 13 with the wind blowing, sucks to be cold.i also had back surgery back in 87 and still gives me problems.

    You are not too old.

What you do need is a hard body against the bad roads and the stamina to unload trailers. 550 boxes of beef at 48,000 pounds to move in 4 hours. Can you do it?

You are too old when you finally lay down and refuse to get up for anything someday. Im past 50 and am trapped in a body no longer fit for the road. But I can probably still do the work on a stack of medicine here and a few 5 gallon buckets of spirits there backed by sheer grump....

The other day I talked with two gals that were team driving otr in a nice aero peterbilt, pulling reefer. It is not surprising to see female drivers. I do not think she would have any trouble shifting a truck.... As far as handling the large size truck, your brain learns how to manage driving the truck. A car feels really small when I get done driving a truck and get into my car. After a couple of weeks driving a truck you will start to feel comfortable, and after a few months you will be very comfortable.

With team driving you will be able to help each other when you are backing into a parking spot or into a dock.

I don't see either one of you having a problem driving a big truck.
