Log Off Duty Driving Home Empty

    Here at the scale we look at everybody, bobtails too.

    If it is going down the road under its own power, it is under all the rules unless it meets a specific exemption, and there are actually only very few of those.

    Many bobtails are missing markings, log books, registration, etc. Still a CMV, even empty/bobtail.

    I usually drop my trailer in town and use the PC exemption to then drive the tractor home and back to the dropped trailer. The vacant lot I drop the trailer in town is for all intents and purposes, the "terminal", per the guidance via FMCSA. I have been checked a few times and nary a problem. Iowa DOT figures anything on the 5th wheel, and they consider the tractor as laden and not qualified for PC exemption. Bobtail, and not going to get a new load, then OK.

    Thanks for the good info, Scalemaster, but that's not what some drivers and dispatchers like to claim... and that might be why they belong to a certain group of folks:
