I'll try to catch both of these at once... "OTR" is just their designation for a Class A CDL driver. There isn't really any part of it that can be called OTR...we're slip seat, day cab only, many runs return to yard the same day. I typically gross between $1000-$1500/week, and that really feels like I'm not working. If I hustle, and grab everything I can, and run my HOS to the last 30 minutes or less, I can relatively easily gross over $2000/wk. Our Aberdeen MD plant has a sign on their fence advertising $75K your first year. Mind you, I just started in January here, so I am low on the totem pole, and we work off a straight seniority bid setup. So it isn't often that I can touch the real money runs...it happens, but usually by volunteering for extra work and having someone else call off a run or be unable to make dispatch time due to HOS or other reasons.
Benefits are tolerable, I can't find my breakdown but it's BCBS/prescription/dental/vision/life all of which start on the day you're hired, and 401K comes in after I think 90 days. There is a pension as well, but I don't think that kicks in right away. We really have very low turnover, at least at my yard. The average length of service at our plant is 18 years, with a handful of the top guys above the 30-year mark.
The work is lighter than foodservice, but it's not as light as you might think. Corn and baked products (pretzels, cookies) are much heavier than chips, as are the trays of salsa. Also bear in mind that with a very few vendor delivery exceptions, everything is floor loaded. That means hand stacking/wrapping pallets at vend stops, or offloading with a 2-wheeler at our route sales depots.
I could go on further, but I don't want to spam up the thread or get sanctioned for seeming like I'm recruiting. I'm not, and don't get anything for recommending someone. Just like where I'm at and have no problem sharing information (though exact pay amounts and stuff I'd prefer to PM as I don't know how universal it is, or if it's terminal-dependent).
The day to day ramblings of the LTL business.

He was little shaken up! Had to replace the 5th wheel plate and one brake chamber on the tractor. Shop was shocked they did not fire the guy.

Alright I've got to go now, but I finished my application process with Frito-Lay I don't know...will see what they say if they say anything at all.
Sho Nuff Thanks this. -
Okay for what it's worth last week I made $1,423.89 at work that's pretty much right on the $1,500.00 line.
I've had 3 weeks off this year and I still have 36 hours of vacation time available and 48 hours of sick time. This year I am projected to make $70K from what it's looking like right now. -
A couple other options if Frito Lay is a no go. -
Mike2633 Thanks this.
