Car dealers can't sell you a car without a valid driver's license.... I imagine CDL A trucks require same.

I'm quite sure that isn't the case. If your business is buying the truck then it shouldn't be a problem. A business can't have a driver's license. Just need someone to drive it.

Didn't stop me from buying mine. And like @jbelles said, company owners wouldn't be able to buy a truck for their drivers if that were true

My intention was not to prove anyone wrong or act as if I was better than anyone here. That is not the type of person I am. I only asked those things because before doing strictly car hauling with this method I did it with flatbed tow trucks and since I didn't go long distance I didn't have to go through weigh stations and because it wasn't solely for auto hauling it was used for motor club and police rotation. I was confused about the medical card because of the weight limits and that I wasn't a current CDL holder. However I have my medical card and have passed my FMCSA New Entrant Audit. I was able to make decent money through United Road and their Car-Max contract. I know I know they don't pay squat but I was able to always be loaded coming and going and by staying in a three to four state area I managed to pick up and deliver twice in the same day. It also helps that I don't have truck or trailer payments at the moment and no other financial obligations except insurance and fuel. As to getting my CDL I have found a place that will let me use their truck and provide an instructor for the test and since I wont ever need to operate a truck with air-brakes I think I could take the test without a vehicle equipped as such. I would get a restriction on my license. I think this is the case unless I am reading the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations book wrong. Section 383.95 (a) 1-2. I may be wrong.
As for pretending to be a "big bad trucker" I am not. I am also not one of these guys going around without the proper insurance with little pull behind u-haul trailers scavenging work from copart for dealers. I am doing everything by the book and am completely legitimate maybe not as big as some of you all but I am paying on the same $1 million dollar liability policy and $250K cargo insurance. I am just trying to make a living and have fun doing it thats all. Never claimed to be better or bigger just honest and hardworking is all

If you are making it then good for you. Although I am fairly certain that we have a different opinion of what "decent living" is.

And yes you are reading it correctly, if you don't plan on operating an air brake rig then you can take the test in a hydraulic brake truck and have a CDL with an air brake restriction. My .02, take it or leave it, is to go ahead and get a full CDL. Why not do it just for a backup plan?

I actually have found a place that will let me use a CDL truck and instructor right there on their course so I will be doing that. I had my NJ CDL back in 1999 when I graduated Smith & Solomon truck school but let it lapse which was dumb so I can remember most of the written and practical portions of the test. Don't think its changed much. As for decent living I think everyones opinion is different and everyones situation is different as well. I think all that matters is if your enjoying what your doing and if it's working for you. I hope things continue to work for you and you remain successful in the future as for me going from a single carrier to a double will bring me to where I can be comfortable. I am looking forward to it and know that now things are going to change. CDL means drug testing which is ok but now I am probably gonna be paying IFTA and more insurance and with diesel prices I am sure more in fuel but all I can do is take it one day at a time.
One thing I did learn was sticking to certain brokers is more profitable then spreading myself out to a lot. Between United Road Reindeer Auto and Montway I am finding decent paying loads. Ready and Cars Arrive just have to many INOPs and not a lot in my area.

Maybe I'm missing something here but you don't need a CDL to haul a 2 car trailer

Nor IFTA IF you are no more than a 2 axle power unit AND under 26,000, even with two pickups at 6,000 each and a 2 place trailer at 6,000 that still lets you 8,000 for a dually if that is what you were thinking???
