Maverick told my nephew that they did not require a CDL school to hire on as a new CDL holder. They said they only required that he had a CDL and did not care how he got it.

I self-studied and borrowed a tractor and dry van through a friend to take my CDL A in Texas.
There was no pre-trip for the exam. As for parallel parking, then we practiced at the testing facility for an hour or so before taking the exam. Not sharing the truck or taking turns with other students helped me get in enough reps within a short amount of time.
I also spent weeks out on the road with other friends who are drivers- about a week driving the entire shift doing local intermodal work in Chicago and then OTR with another friend for several weeks with only a few short spells of driving on the interstates and a bit in empty truck stops.
My options were limited to 1099 in the beginning, but after a few years they opened up a bit, and only a bit because I job hopped as well. I'm going to finish a full year with one company at the end of this year, hopefully.
You can do a CDL A on the cheap in Texas, however your expectations should be tempered in terms of employment.
