I thought expenses incurred getting another job in you industry MAY be deducted, but not when changing industries, otherwise we could deduct expenses related to getting a job selling sun tan oil in Hawaii.

Yes u can use on your taxes if you file a schedule A. Also you cannot be reimbursed by a company that will hire you.

We may have to commiserate in a few years down the road then. I haven't heard anything from them, either...... yet.

tscottme had it right. The short answer is "no". You can deduct education costs to maintain or improve your skills for your current occupation, but you can't deduct expenses for training for a new profession.
Here's a link to pub 970 that explains it all.

All that being said, you may be able to deduct part of that expense using the Lifetime Learning Credit.

SoDel Thanks this. -
When I left the C.I.A. They said we shouldn't lie, and I never have.

This is what my tax advisor told me last year.

I wrote mine off. Everything I read said "you can't write it off" because my school was not a "qualifying instituion" (a community college would have been a qualifying institution, but not Joe's Truck Driving School).
But I was prepared to make the quixotic case that while my school was not accredited, employers accepted it and that's all the truly matters. I certainly could not have been hired without it.
Would I lose in an audit? Probably. Would I make a big enough stink that it would cost the IRS more to defend their silly stance than they would stand to collect? Absolutely. The IRS hates to take cases to court, and often settles at huge discounts during the appeals process. -
Only improving your skills.
...so get a job as a pizza delivery guy before you go.
Where's Teds postcard when you need it.
