How long do you wait to cut off?

  1. I cut at ¼ truck-lenght

  2. I cut at ⅓ truck-lenght

  3. I cut at ½ truck-lenght

  4. I cut at 1 truck-lenght

  5. I don't really care how close I cut.

This guy was going maybe .9 miles per hour faster than me, took him like 2 minutes to pass. Then he cuts over and slows down forcing me to slow down slower than what I was doing when he was originally behind me, which is why he wanted to pass; to go faster but he passes and goes slower?

I won't come over until I can see the full face of your truck ,( that's about a half truck length ahead ) and then I will gauge on it until I'm Atleast three lengths ahead of you , then go back into cruise control
.... This is the way I was trained and I have never had a problem ever in over 30 yrs of spotless driving record

Same here. If I can see both your headlights in my mirror. I'm coming over. If I was passing you I should be going faster anyway. Unless it's one of those guys that speeds up about the time you get even with them. Those are the ones I wanna give a swift kick in the pants too lol

    Surprising answers here!

Pulling 13 and 14 wide loads recently with and without escorts, a truck re-entering my lane any less than an eighth of a mile creates a hazard - unless I can see a full mile ahead of clear shoulder obstructions before they do so.

I typically don't pass until traffic is clear behind for a quarter mile - backing up traffic to pass unfairly creates a box-in for the vehicle you're passing.

Once I'm out to pass - foot goes down, get it over with quick, and be prepared to back out or veer left if you see a situation that you've created.

I don't pass near ramps unless I know they're clear.

Bottom line - What is a safe following distance for a driver? Then double it and give it to them when you pass.

Governed trucks - drove them for years. My wife would sit behind Prime for miles on I40 in 75mph zones until an opportune moment appeared - its the safest approach.

Finally - respect the other drivers load - heavy load? Leave more room. Let the 4 wheelers zip around on the right if they're that impatient, they're the ones creating a hazard. Just watch for them when you slip on back to the right.

I sometimes do it because I don't use CC much (makes me feel out of control) and if I am thinking of something, changing CD,picking up lighter from the floor etc I may slow down for a moment. It's not being an ahole I am just saving myself having to pass you in a moment. And don't worry,if you governed at 62-67mph it's usually a swift process.

I personally am in the "allow plenty of space" camp, because in addition to the fact that it is simply ignorant to cut anyone off ESPECIALLY another truck, my luck being what it is the truck I'm passing will look up from typing his text message or whatever he's doing and decide to mash on it.

I like to be far enough ahead to where I won't be affected by ancillary stupidity. Of course, this comes with the cost of four wheelers passing me on the right at 20 mph over the speed limit, but I just wait for them to clear out.
