How different is a van from a dump trailer? I have 10 + years driving van and wanted to go local.

Me too.
Ive been told that it all depends on the area, like where u live, and what commodity and truck specs.
For example I live in Michigan and I couldn't pull the heavy loads with my weak van truck. -
Working with a Dump trailer can be very stressful depending on what jobs you take. There is dump trailer for aggregates, scrap metal, etc. I haul mainly construction debris and scrap metal from demo sites and backing is very common. If you arent good at your backing dont pull a dump wagon because some of the places you will have to go can get crazy.

About as opposite as wine is to champaign, some can deal with it some cant

It's different.
Consider the frame of the dump. It's a single rail from the 5th wheel all the way to the tandems like a Gym Balance beam, everything balances on that. You get that side to side tippy on speed restricted ramps minus 15 mph.
Dumping a load right requires a keen sense of terrain, any side slope or angle will tip you over and hurt or try to kill you. As well as plastering your demise on you tube as the next darwin sensation here on TTR
It's FUN. pulling a dump. Profitable too.
