I've read a lot of these motor vs. motor threads and they come down to opinion and preference. I drive a paccar and I think it's a dog. my dad has 1.1 mil on his 07 ISX and hasn't done an I frame yet. He has replaced the turbo, head, cams, injectors , and misc. these new motors are more problematic but I think they get better every year. The auto industry figured out how to make power and economy with emission controls a long time ago. Think 69z28 vs. 2013-14 z28- only a fool would think the old motor is better( hear we go).

Doesn't mean the Paccar is better or worse then the ISX.
There is a a thread by @Belials about warranty.
    Worth reading.
Basicly Paccar gives better/longer warranty on their own productline vs Cummin.

I'll check it out, thanks. I've hear horror stories about all the new motors, pick your poison I guess. Extended warranty is def a good thing.
My old n14 cost me 10 grand to rebuild ten or twelve years ago. ( good old days I guess).
Didn't mean to insult about paccar, just not real impressed with the pulling power but the 500/1850 is prod a lot better than the 485/1650 I'm driving.

Thankfully it is not my truck. It was my company truck. Same guy I'm leased to. My truck is just an old jalopy. No way I could have bought that truck for my first truck like $80k then had that happen. Looks like cummins is going to cover about 50% of it. Complete crate motor.

This is absolutely true. Aside from some cases, most engines are just as good as the rest. What you should be more concerned about is service. Can the engine manufacturer provide me the level of service that I require, and how will they treat me? Does it have the specifications I want? Etc.

Some people get lucky, and some people are very unlucky - with Paccars and with Cummins. I've seen both sides of it. Owners of engines who have the truck in the shop monthly with major repairs, but have other units that have never had a failure. It's just a roll of the dice. And you're absolutely correct - each year, they improve. This is especially true with the Paccar MX. The MX13-10s didn't do so well, almost everyone can agree to that. But the MX13-13 is a different story. By then, engineering figured out most of the kinks and resolved them. Manufacturing issues, training issues, etc.

@daf105paccar is correct about that. I'll say it over and over - GENERALLY SPEAKING, Paccar will provide more "good will" than Cummins. Goodwill is what they consider providing financial assistance for a repair outside of warranty. Your base warranty for both engines is 24 months / 250,000 miles. Outside of that, if you have a failure - your own course of action is to pay for it and see if the manufacturer will assist.

Generally, Paccar is more forgiving. BOTH of them want to see that you have properly maintained the engine, and they both like to see that you took steps to protect yourself (aka: buying extended coverage). However, Paccar makes its decisions on a case by case basis by rep, with the dealer involved. Cummins makes the decisions in a similar manner - but they have hard limits. 4 year old engine? No extended warranty? Instant rejection, no goodwill assistance.

With Paccar, your local dealership will work with their rep to get you assistance. With Cummins, your local dealership doesn't have nearly as much involvement.

Obviously that can't be all you can consider though. Cummins still has far more service facilities on the road, and if they have the specs you need, Cummins is who you should go for.

    daf105paccar Thanks this.

Goofed up that last post- oops!
Thanks for the info Belials, I also read your warranty thread with interest. Warranty is definatly an important issue when purchasing a big ticket item.
I kind of got away from my original weight question. Does any one have a t680 with a big bunk (or mid roof) and a high torque ISX with a stamped weight of less than 18k?
