I worked at the shipyard (Bath Iron Works) that is building these ships as a welder before I went back to driving truck. These ships are absolutely amazing to be on, in, or near! Most of the "cool" stuff is above my pay grade and security clearance, but the capabilities that this ship has is unbelievable. It's like being inside a spaceship, and with that being said, it is fitting that the captains name of the first DDG1000 is James Kirk. Last time I checked though, unfortunately these were only going to be used for training purposes but I have a hard time believing that. It'd be way too fun to touch off the rail gun at some Somali pirates or ISIS that think they're bad _ss.

 

Just left Bath a week ago. That destroyer looks mean.

 

It's misdirection, but a bit of truth. Congress controls discretionary funding every year including military budget, and discretionary funding is about 1/3 of our overall budget. Say our budget this year is 3.2trillion, Congress gets to play with 1 trillion of that. The largest part of discretionary funding is military, so even at 66% that's 660million, which comes to to a bit over 20% of our overall budget.

 

$660 billion, $660 million would be .06%
