Thin Screenshot_2016-11-06-08-29-23.png Thinking about purchasing a 1991 Topkick single axle dump truck it has Allison tranny with Caterpillar 3116. I'm actually looking at two trucks, the other is a 1994 with 54k miles with a Caterpillar 3126 auto both have 12ft dumps. Any advice!!!

anything a dumptruck holds, rock, dirt.Just not as much as a normal dump hauls. But that type of truck is ideal to haul material to homes. Is that what you plan on using it for?

Your dumptruck is smaller then what I have drove. But you can haul anything just not as much.I think for small to medium size projects that's the perfect dump. Not so sure about the large jobs.

We won a truck just like that in a gov auction. Ours is automatic 3speed and came with front plow. The one thing we didn't realize until after we got it was the top speed is only 51mph due to its gearing.
We use it to occasionally haul stone and plow snow in the winters

Make sure that you know the legal max weight you can be with either truck. Our hi way patrol has troopers scoping out the 3 big quarries we have becausewith all of our highway projects going on, we have so many guys are just buying trucks , and loading it to the brim and leaving the quarries thousands of pounds over gross.

You are recieving very best advice here.

I add that you need a tarp system. I don't care what you have on that truck, tarp it. Your state may vary, I would double check that very carefully.

You should have a pintle hook on the back with airline connectors for beaver trailers etc. You might want to consider keeping a few stones that will put about a thousand pounds in the bed when you haul these trailers. That truck is not really strong for that compared to say a Mack500 Super converted from 5th wheel to dump.

Im not sure about that drive shaft. You might want a tag axle added to that. I see there is room for one possibly. But it might have to be a independant tag with a actuator on each wheel and nothng that connects them in the middle.

(Or just buy a three axle dump truck, preferably one with tag axles too. Two sets of tags if you can get em.. weight is your enemy because any dusty can fill you with stone and the Law knows this. KACHING! Tickets! And they know exactly which bridges to aim for once they undersand generally what roads you need to take to your today's job.

That is a nice little two axle. But to me? It's a child that needs two trips to do what any ordinary tandem dump can do with a tag.

If you can get a 5 axle semi tractor trailer with dump you might find your options opening up far and wide. We will never run out of stone here in America. The very mountains round us gaurantee that.

Are you a contractor, or are you planning to haul for hire? A truck like that might work well in conjunction with a small construction company, but I don't think it will stand on its own hauling for hire. A larger truck will generate more revenue in the same amount of time, and open up the possibility of hauling for large contractors who in most instances won't use the smaller truck.

i dont know where you are located, but you cant put much on a two axle here.....

our little 3 axle mack is only good for 28,000kg, and tares at 16,500kg minimum, the 4 axle mack i drive is 34,500kg, tare @ 17,700 minimum (theyre roll offs, tares with an empty 20yd can, bigger bin = higher tare)

you would only get 9,000kg (max) steer and 9,000kg (max) drive allowed, based on axles/springs/rims/tires/spread....giving you 18,000kg, but i have no idea what it would tare at, and no idea what the laws are like where the OP is....
