I remember a popular mustached DOT officer near Spokane, WA once warned me that I cannot show an average of 61 mph in Montana between Billings and their scale and the next time he would see me do that he would bust me bad mercilessly . Seeing that I was green and fresh he also told me that I'd better be perfect with my logs in Oregon as they can check when I pass their scales even if they're closed. Now 13 years later all this infrared equipment seems everywhere. Does anyone have any knowledge if these are accessible to the scales anywhere else? Can Iowa Highway Patrol reference that info? I am asking as I had an inspection in IA at an exit ramp and the men wanted me to show him everything including my food receipts and paper trail and he called the WY Port of Entry to ask what time I checked in. Well he was nice and all, he told me about his father's farm and Iowa agricultural economy, also told me that IL based trucks made him more suspicious than others. Based on that bias I fell a victim of his scrutiny. He was nice and courteous, so I don't want to talk bad about him even though he wasted about 1 hour of my log book time. Can't they just punch in my plate numbers and their system would show times of my passing in UT, MO, NE and so on?
Infrared cameras at scales in IL, MO, UT, NM, AZ, NE, IA, so on...

First, concerning your meal receipts, how did he know you even had them? Then only then with a search warrant specifying what they are search for. His niceness is only a way to get you to agree to let him do something that is illegal. They are trained to do this type of "buddy, buddy ####".
As far as passing scales when they are closed, only when you are running "pre-pass" can they check. Take your "pre-pass" down, store it into a "safe like container", a box that will prevent the Transponder from emitting signals.. -
Why don't you just log it as you do it? Then you will have no problem. It also gets you in the habit of being legal for when the ELD mandate comes out.
Lepton1, TequilaSunrise, Ke6gwf and 1 other person Thank this. -
I did not have any receipts other than fuel receipts or CAT scale receipts. It was a generic question. I did not have to worry about my logs. All loading/offloading and fuel times were perfect. I just don't get why they set up all those cameras everywhere and don't seem to have the capability to see when I passed them but still want to call number on receipts and rely on info some fuel desk clerk might offer. By the way, there is not any DOT requirement for me to have any receipts whatsoever. All I need to show is my log book, CDL, Medical Card and all other credential documents. I use Comdata so technically I can just fuel and go.

on 11/13/16 i got a logbook ticket. pulled out for 10 hours. I was heading east on I-40 and saw the flashing lights showing exit to inspection station. it's just passed Shamrock, TX. Entered and was stopped for inspection. The officer opened his notebook and asked me: last two days only you drove this truck? I said yes. And he logged somewhere and showed me what time and what day my truck passed AZ,NM port of entries on I-40 (there where b/w photos too) . He said now we can see this license plate's traveling times in TX,AZ,NV,NM,OR,WA...

I logged it as I went, except I logged it better than it was, there wasn't any problem. Yes ELDs will disperse all these IA "I don't trust you" attitude situations, but what will they poor fellows do with all these nice white "Motor Vehicle Enforcement" SUVs?
-
That's it! Thank you sir!!!! That's exactly the info I was looking for. Holly cow! You happened to see the Shamrock scale open. Never happened to me. I even thought that place was all abandoned and dilapidated to the point of no use. Sorry to hear about you getting caught.

I drive more than 16 years on I-40 and I have seen that place open twice only. this year in October and that day in November when they wrote me up. that place is not abandoned. they have nice office and modern scale there. I am glad that I got this ticket in tx and not in az or ca..it was only 250 greens. of course would be great if I would not receive it but now I know what they can search any moment

So it means, that the times of entry in AZ, NM also exiting NM (past San Jon) then we have all modern scale in OK, MO.... must be perfect. Might as well do it on ELDs...well almost. One might consider taking US 54 but that slows you down considerably.
