I think you might be misunderstanding what he meant by charging for a tire.a lot of container company will charge an O/O and even a company driver for a tire on the chassiy or trailer if they determine that it was what they call ran flat in other words the tire was flat and you just keep driving on it.

I'm split on this. I picture ALOT of careless drivers just 'limping' a trailer to a drop yard with a flat, putting the burden on the next guy...they SHOULD be charged...it is a crappy thing to do, and in my experience (being the 'next guy') happened all too often.
On the other hand; try to do the right thing and make a call for road service, and 9 times out of 10 they tell you to drive on it to the nearest shop or yard to try and save the service charge.
    How do you win?

The law may have changed, but in the past if the container company fixed or replaced the tire, then sent the bill to the shipping company, such as Evergreen, they wouldn't pay it. The trucking container company was stuck with the expense.

Yes I can understand what your saying.Think your talking about general freight company's .container truckin companies are totally different about tires. The shipping co that owns the chassis is responsible for the tires unless they say the truckin co had neglected the tire they will charge the truckin co.Since most companies pulling containers run on a small profit margins they don't want to buy a chassis tire so they will charge it back to drivers. You will hardly ever see a container hauler run on a flat he will stop as soon as he can some are required to check air pressure before they leave with the chassis

Your probably exactly right I don't know all the ins and outs of it I only pulled containers for a little while.i did know the terminal manager at TCW in Charlotte they are one of the companies that will charge a company driver for a tire if they run on a flat tire.It wouldn't surprise me about what your saying tho .The shipping companies pretty much will only pay for a worn out tire.
