I've bid a lot of projects and always paid the drivers by the hour.

I recall one stockpile job that I bid at over $3 Million dollars. Made very good profit on it.

Use this for a Guideline, Figure out you total driver costs, whether by the mile, hour, load etc. Factor in Holiday Pay, EI, CPP WCB, etc. NEVER take on any work where your driver costs will EXCEED 28 % of the gross revenue or you will lose your arse.

Thanks for detailed replies, Prairie Boy. A couple of more questions:

Your add mentions that gross rate of pay is $30/hour. What percentage of this is take home? If the same flatbed work was to be done in Ontario, what would the pay be?

What is the reason you like to pay drivers based on hours worked? Do you pay hourly even for line-haul work where the driver is out for multiple days? If so, how would you structure the pay if you had to pay based on Milage?

If you get a contract that is based on miles ran, how would you convert the miles to hours to be able to pay the driver?

Also, what are your tactics to get the most of the drivers and how do you retain them?

"Able to pay incorporated drivers"? You mean they advertise that incorporated drivers are welcome. It doesn't mean it's legal.

Why don't you go to the CRA web page for Employee or Self-employed?. Then contact the carrier yourself and ask them questions about how they work it. Then decide if you think you're fully up to the task of defending yourself during an audit in a small windowless room in the bowels of a Canada Revenue office sometime in your future.

I am not saying its legal. I am just asking how they are able to get away with it.

I have studied accounting and tax and now the test to determine if someone is an employee or contractor.

Pretty hard to argue someone who doesn't own the truck or otherwise have any stake in the business as a contractor ....

They're able to "get away with it" until they aren't. You can do pretty much anything you want until you're caught. They can sometimes go years before they get audited; there are something like 1.2 million registered businesses in Canada.

Hard to compare prairie boys examples to the average carriers. I own a couple trucks but not the trailers, I'm hauling for the company who owns the trailers. I'd be hard pressed to survive paying $525 a day plus living out allowance plus benifits etc etc.

so let's just keep in mind. That kind of wage paid would bury freight haulers who were leased to a carrier in no time.
