My opinion is buy an inexpensive but decent CB to start with if you get into the CB thing
you can upgrade later. saw a great deal on amazon for a pretty decent Uniden

Your question gets asked a lot on here. You have to ask yourself what do you want the radio to do and what for. If you just want to be loud and aggravate everyone then get a cobra and put a kicker behind it. If you want to shoot skip and put your big boy pants on with extra channels then get a more expensive one. I've personally found the new galaxy 44 is a good " big " little radio. Around 50 watts output without paying a high price for a bunch of channels your not going to use. The only real difference from a cobra 29 classic and one of the high dollar ones are the faceplate and a channel board. As well as echo and reverb, but you can put that in a 29 and no one will be able to tell the difference if it's set up right. Also, if you get a radio that they are telling you that it's a dual final radio, look to see if the radio is set up for ssb. If it has ssb then one final drives the ssb and the other drives the reg channels. Unless the tech bridges the two finals to work on am then they are conning you. Good luck and I hope that this helps.

The question is how long do you plan to drive or hold the steering wheel of a truck. Most new people don't last. The promise of big money  awesome home timeo_O. The average person who lost their job back home decided they wanted to try driving truck as a great alternative. See the country. Oh yeah.. Most towns have us so choked out that its such a pain in the ars to see anything except from a distance... So do you want to spend 200/300/400/500 on a radio that you may or may not get to use if you decide to that this lifestyle isn't quit what the recruiter said it was going to be.. I have been driving for the last 20 yrs. I have operated or pulled all kinds of trailers. My radio is always on with the squelch all the way down and gain all the way up. There may not be very many people who talk on the open road but when something happens I can hear them talking and plan accordingly. So go buy a big radio spend your hard earned money and then when this isn't for you sell it on craigslist or ebay. At least buying a less costly cobra you can put it on the shelf and you don't need to get rid of it. I have 5 radios. 99v,447hpc,4300-300,959,94hp.

No need to buy an expensive radio. A Cobra 25 or a Uniden PC 68 will do the same job. Do make sure you run a very good antenna. A Sirio 5000 is a very good antenna. And run good coax like LMR-240 or RG8X, but not the truck stop grade. Buy online from a ham radio store. They sell the good stuff.

True. Biggest issue with 23 channel radios is dried capacitors and crystals off frequency.

    .

SSB allows you to talk farther but more efficiently. The downfall is you have to dial the other guy in and he has to also have a SSB radio. Plus those on AM won't be able to hear what you say because you'll sound mumbled like Donald duck.

I need help as well. I am looking at building a base unit for my f250. I am looking for distance and reliability. I am not so concerned at staying in the low price range, but more for getting out there reliably and without fail. I have listened here to build up the distance and will opt for a KL 203P amplifier. Now I need solid info from the truckers here on the unit and the antenna setup. I see most are leaning toward the following brands: Cobra; Uniden and Galaxy. I welcome your input and professional advice. I want the following from my truck unit: distance, reliability and clear reception/communication. Thanks in advance.
