I have a detroit series 60 14L that is over boosting. The turbo gage was only showing max psi at 30 35 lbs..It is now boosting well into the 45 50 psi range.Anybody tell me what is going on.When it does this usually when hitting a grade in the road, wide open throttle the check engine light will come on and go off if you let off throttle.Any help appreciated.

Are you getting up the hills any faster, just out of curiosity?

Your 14l has a variable vane turbo. The vanes are stuck closed causing the turbo to over speed and over boost.

Could be the turbo it self or the vpod controller that controls the vanes on the turbo.

You better figurr it out soon thou cause turbos dont like to be over sped.

Contrary to many peoples thinking, more boost dont always mean more power.
In this guys case he probley even has less power because of the immense back pressure caused by the closed vanes in the exaust side of the turbo. Plus now the engine has to work against the high boost pressure.

You only need enough boost to keep egts in check, any more and your loosing fuel economy driving the turbo excessively. Ussally the result of a turbo thats to restrictive in the exaust side.

To Mack E-6 not getting up the hills any faster .. You guys saying the turbo vanes are stuck closed. If the vpod is doing that is there a way to determine if the vpod is bad?

    Ive actually never owned a ddec5 .i have a 14l ddec4.
But what i would do is unhook the rod going to the arm that controlls the vanes on turbo and see if it moves freely. If its sticky and hard to move then its probley something internal on the turbo .

If it moves fine with no binding im willing to say its the controller

If your turbo and vpod is original or has lots miles maybe its time for a replacement. Those items are kinda quirky at the best of times, hence people resort to other scenarios we cant discuss here.

Thanks for the comeback. Both the turbo and Vpod are original with over 958000 on them. Will replace the Vpod and see what it does and go from there.
