I guess I was lucky when I started at May Trucking back in 2009. My trainer was a cool older dude with 2 million plus miles who enthusiastically welcomed me into his space.
Even with that, I remember that lost and out of place feeling I had the first night I climbed up onto the upper bunk.
Other than the fact that the inside of his cab was disorganized and packed full of stuff and that he smoked (I don't) we got along great, he answered all my questions and let me drive a lot.
He invited me to help myself to the food in his pantry & refrigerator, etc.
He was sensitive to make sure we stopped and showered at least every other day. He even paid for my shower at Little America because he wanted me to experience the luxury of what is their signature showers.
I soloed out (because of his recommendation) after only 9 days on his truck and have never looked back in a negative way to my training experience.
I'm a owner operator now and love what I do. However, I'm not sure how it would of worked out for me if I had ended up with someone like the lazy slobs that some of the newbies speak about here.

My mentor at swift was alright. he'd been driving 20 years and I learned alot from him. we got along great too.
It's funny. with everyone saying it gets better after training it does. altho I could went stand swift aand left lol at least Im on my own -
Be calm. whatever happens. Please. Try to be calm during the encounter with the DM. Nothing shouts professionalism more than being respectful, calm and laying out your cards in a powerful assertive way.
I tell you this. A trainer who said to your face, hell naw no CAT today.. LAZY. L:AZY LAZY. I decided then that this trainer either burned himself out and don't give a #### anymore functioning in a haze of a world away from everyone else or something. Get away from him.
Or better yet break it off him. Just like my trainers at the shoothouse break my rust off me.Concorde Thanks this. -
Eff him. No disrespect intended. Im disappointed in trainer. If there is anything good and decent left in him, he should be ashamed of himself for letting go like a slob. Least he can do is say he is sorry and then start work on getting his #### back together.
Concorde you are going to be a hell of a driver already. Don't get puffed big head britches here... stay, easy boy... pace yourself. It's your life. But I gotta tell you, you would be a #### good trainee in my cab... any day.Concorde and truckerpuppy1122 Thank this. -
I had many hard and good trainers or Trucker Daddies I call them. (You young ones may get creeped out, but that is exactly what it was back in the day.. for me anyhow..)
One in Particular. He was one of the best as far as Im concerned. He brought up the subject of the radio preaching all night in his ear while he was in the sleeper berth, courtesy of the gigawatt pioneer speakers times 4. I told him Im a christian you got a problem with that mister? He thought about it then looked in my eye and said Im a Hellion. You have a problem with that? Right there life long friendship. But it's something we will always work on. I don't know if he is still with us what with age or not... I'll work on his soul. Or let the angel Michael do it. lol. -
Also another thing I've noticed with both the mentors I had was they're stubborn and don't listen. Maybe they know something i don't.ex- there can be ten open parking places at a TA. And both my mentors would still risk parking illegally too be closer too store. ( I never understood why cause they still urinated on the side of truck). Also mentor has been cursed out 2x by yard dogs for simply not following directions at shippers. ( Getting a dedicated empty trailer or ignoring yard rules). One shipper in Oregon made us wait 5 hours simply because he thought he could tell the lady how to do her job.

Once you learn too tune out the bad habits ( concentrated booger picking and flicking, or weird moans and the talking too self) you can get through it. I always think of it this way. There's a soldier over seas who won't be coming home for 6 months too a year. So I know I can get through this. You can too.
