also, get your own coax and ground the antenna if you mount it behind the cab. i am using a *gasp clear insulation wilson coax. been used for months with no issues.
i have certainly received 15 miles. no way mine would ever transmit near that far. it was strong to about 2 miles and fuzzy to 3 unless in open areas.

I'm curious, what research have you done to determine it is junk?
The reason I ask is I own a few macks and we have been using the factory system with sort of good luck, it isn't junk.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
the research i did was use the factory provided coax and antenna. it was terrible. i've tried 4 different trucks with the same result.

That's what other drivers in my company have said and I saw some issues online others have had. I'm all about getting the radio and trying the stock antenna first. I'd rather not buy an antenna if I didn't need to. -
It is known that most factory antenna/coax setups are sub-par. This is usually the first thing most people deal with installing a radio in a new truck. But since you are not really seeking perfection at this time, and you are relatively new to cb, install the radio to the factory setup. Then, if you get bit by thr radio bug, and seek to improve performance, look into different antennas, changing coax and such. Jmo..slim6596 and Air Cooled Thank this.

Steel bodies?

I run a Cobra 29 in my Kenworth, with a mirror-mount Wilson 2000. It works really well on transmit as well as receive. I ran new coax (just cheap truck stop mini-8) when I installed it (it's been over a year now) and it's still doing fine.
I'm leased to a company that runs a fleet of Volvos. They all run the same radio (Cobra 29) but mostly factory coax and antennas. I out-talk and out-receive them regularly.
There's no substitute for a good antenna, low SWR, and good coax. Makes just about any radio work good.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
Soooooo...... apparently we live in a world where if you type the number "eight" followed by an "end-parenthesis", you are immediately blessed with a cute little smiley face, and your paragraph now makes no sense whatsoever.
Guess I learn something new every day.slim6596 and Snow Walker Thank this. -
Some of them have composite panels in them now. Only pulled apart the oldest one we have to work on it, it was more or less an insulation upgrade not a radio one, 2012 and it was steel. I have one driver who uses an IC-7000 in his with a scorpion screwdriver, he has no issues what so ever with the truck, he does a lot of QRP work so I would imagine that he needs a good system with 3 or 4 watts he uses.rabbiporkchop Thanks this.
