talk about smell....I did 2months in the 80s hauling solid human sludge in tippers dug out of an old quarry where it had been dumped for 20yrs( the ground water level was rising so it was to be dug out and taken 50miles to a lined landfill .....dear god on our first run the lights turned to red in a small town we ran through ,people were throwing up in the street ..we used a can of air freshener in the cab every run! anyway by the time we (4 truck convoy) came back through town we had a police escort, for the rest of the contract going through town john law was waiting to rush us through . Not once were we stopped by john law /checked out. by the way this was back in the auld country(Scotland ) at my first truck job. jimmy

I've been hauling sludge for the last 3.5 years. As far as I've experienced, there is no way to stop it from smelling completely. Then again, I dont notice it anymore lol

They installed a perfume kit. Works pretty good..I've heard it has to do with the population expansion around here. People are living and working in what used to be wide open field. businesses and homes are cropping up.

To be honest though. I think it has to do with the other truck spilling oil on the ground. He's never drained his exhaust now it's plum full. Although the ground has dried out.

Perfume kit been installed 2 weeks now. Waiting for approval to use the pump again. I don't think it's going to happen.

This sounds a little more explanatory!!

I ran a honey wagon as a teenager,
If you don't drain the exhaust trap regularly, and clean it good every so often, I'mean unhook the hose, degreaser and steam jenny right down it's throat!!
It will dribble all over, and make a mess, like a drip droit would do!!

Depending on your tank setup, condition, and valving? and haul distance?
You could pull a vacuum on the tank after you blow your load...
    Sorta Precharge it for pickup!!
If it'll hold vacuum till you go to load it should greatly reduce your gravity load time!! still won't get a full load but the first half will pull in....

Also Vacum or dry pump loading is so much neater and cleaner than product pump loading!! you can suck the lines dry and not spill any when you disconnect.

    On another note,
Have heard of, but never used or seen an exhaust filter bag for odor??
If memory serves me right it was for the top hatch on a dry bulk tanker???
No Idea if it's true or worked or made in other "shapes"!! be worth a search.

The tank don't hold vacuum. I don't think the pump is designed to hold vacuum . There's a valve that has a plunger that gets sucked in to allow air in the pump and trailer . if I hold it closed . it really shoots out the sludge smoke out of exhaust .

I now have a box as part of the exhaust. it holds perfume. but I still can't use my pump.

I'm tempted to rig up a different vacuum source. Something quiet they'll never hear. Like a ac vacuum pump. But something stronger.
