If my understanding is correct, Millis has "upgraded" their training pay to .41cpm - does this go into effect once you are paired with your trainer? Are you paid weekly, bi-weekly?
After school starts, which week do you actually start earning? Is it the 3rd week, the 4th week? I am just trying to get an overall general sense of how much money I will need to get through this. I also read you have to purchase an Atlas map book for class. Is there any other additional purchases that need to be made for the class (other than the learner's permit and the physical exam)?
Since I live close to Cartersville, I will not be needing to stay at a hotel during class. I am about a 30-45 minute drive away.
Thanks in advance. -
The school itself is three weeks; you don't start earning money until you are on the road with a trainer. Our pay weeks start on a Tuesday and end on the following Monday; you will get paid either on the Friday after the pay week ends if you have it sent a Comdata card or the next Tuesday if you have Direct Deposit (basically, a week after the pay week ends). Either way, you are paid weekly. So, I'd save at least a month and a half of bill money just to be sure (it would keep you from getting close to being in the hole).
As for the .41 training pay, that hasn't started yet and won't until the beginning of the year. They are supposed to send out a message today describing the new pay packages - I make less than that now and I've been with them since July 2014, so I'm interested to see what it will be bumped up to. When I started, training pay was like $72 a day and you had to drive a minimum of four hours to make it. They made it .26 a mile for all miles driven by the training truck last year, and now they are increasing it again.
The only thing you'll need money for at school is lunch. There are vending machines with sandwiches and such, across the bridge are a Pilot with a Subway and a McDonald's, and a Travel Center Of America with a Burger King, Popeye's, Taco Bell, and a diner.
I went to the Cartersville school myself, and I lucked out because a friend of mine lived off the same exit. He let me stay at his place during the weekdays so I didn't have to drive from Marietta.Last edited: Dec 15, 2016

I went to the DDS near downtown Canton to pick up a CDL manual. While I was there, I asked a few questions. The learner's permit is $35 application fee plus $10 for the test. You will also need your medical certificate. The road test is done in Gainesville and she "thinks" it is $150. She also told me that a chiropractor can do the medical certificate.

One more question about School. I drive the Uber XL platform, part time; I have been doing well on Friday and Saturday nights, especially the Buckhead area at closing time. Since I live close to the school, could I also do the Uber XL during the evenings? How much homework do they assign?

I was told by someone who went through the Ohio school that there was some homework ( trip planning etc) but it wasn't a lot.

I ended up doing my CDL road test down in Albany, Georgia, because they had the least amount of wait time for the road test appointment. I don't know if that's still true, but note that Millis has a yard in Albany so it's easier to at least get there.
As for the Uber thing, it should be fine but I'd check with your instructor. Most of the homework is mapping routes using your atlas or doing some quizzes in the notebooks they give you and that shouldn't take too much of your time. At least once, though, plan to be out in the evening hours - they want to make sure people can drive at night and I think that takes place on a Friday but don't quote me on that.DRAGON64, chi-town joe, zany_steverino and 1 other person Thank this. -
