You might want to check out the electronics forum, lots of info there and maybe a better place for this question...

My hubby has a TV in his truck they work like any other TV or you can hook them up to Idle Aire

Well you either need a tv that has a cigarette plug on the plug in or have a 300 watt power inverter to run it. As for reception I had to put a seperate tv antenna on my mirror mount to get reception, you usually only get two or three channels unless your in a major city. I got sick of only getting crappy reception and noticing a show was on that I really wanted to watch so now I just use my laptop for movies and tv shows I downloaded at home.

a t.v. kit for a laptop is 69 at best buy. lets you hook the antenea in and switch channels ect... still no reception if you're out in the sticks like I often am. So I use the lap-top to watch dvd's...

Most newer trucks have an antenna built into them or use a multiplexing box from the CB antennas. There's usually a cable sticking out in the TV compartment area & a 12 volt lighter plug for the TV. You can use almost any 110 volt TV with an inverter but it usually makes the inverter run usually creating interference in the TV picture & raising the temp inside the truck if the inverter isn't in your side box.
You can buy an over priced one at a truck stop or camping store but the best bet is off of the internet or listening to the CB around truck stops. Make sure whatever you get fits in the truck &/or the TV compartment.
I've got a 12 volt 13" color TV/DVD combo & it doesn't do to bad. When I stop for the night I always try to catch the local news & weather. For extended stays when I get bored with the laptop I put in a movie. I've collected hundreds of movies by visiting the local pawnshops & getting them for $3.00's & under.
Oh yeah... make sure that it's secured by whatever means & won't come loose. Back to that "usually" thing, there's usually a strap in the TV compartment to hold down the TV, make sure to use it. -
They work fine...for now.
If you don't buy HD or a converter, it will be a very large paper weight after the first of the year. -
Something that you may want to concider is a good laptop. You dont have to get the TV tuner for it, all of the networks have websites where you can go and watch FULL episodes of most of their shows. I use this to catch up on show that I have missed. It is a lot nicer too because you dont have to sit thru multi-commercials, most show are broken down into 4 sections with a 30 sec. commercial in between sections. As long as you have internet you are good to go.

Just picked up a good laptop at best buy dual core processor and 3 gigs of ram for 450 good deal.

You don't need HD or a converter. The TV just needs a digital tuner, not analog, which most if not all have now, if you plan to capture television signals through old school air waves (rather than hooking up a dish to your truck and a receiver for DishNetwork or DirecTV).
I believe the final date allowed to broadcast analog is at the end of February as well, not the first of the year.
