The new owner of a vehicle requiring 2290 is liable for any/all past years if there is no proof of payment. Not just the current year. 2290 is not required if you plate the truck for less than 55,000.

What do you mean quoted? Are you not at the DMV? Are you at a 3rd party? This story has a fishy smell.

No I wasn't at the DMV.. I'm one of those guys who try's to figure out the best options before hand. I can assure you there's nothing "fishy" going on at least not on my side of the isle. I just don't want to pay for a bunch of stuff I don't need right now. I'm really not sure whether or not I want to sale the truck for cash or use it to make money yet. It's a truck I haven't test driven yet to any real degree so some uncertainty obviously. I mean it runs and drives and the previous owner pretty much quit his job were he was running it at the time went home and parked it in the yard were it set for 4 or so years and know I have it.

1099, occ/acc, 1040SE, 2290, and the like are not things you talk about to get plates. They are things you must know to own a truck. If you want to just own a truck and be broke by Jan 1 just buy plates and get it over with...

I wasn't sure what exactly the forms you were giving were for as you gave no information on them. Why would I just want to go broke? People who get on forums to get knowledge in the area they are trying to succeed in are usually not the stupid one's just for future reference.

PS- debts die with the name on the title...liens are the only survivor. If there is a lien on the title, that entity owns the truck. A "lost title" is about as big of a RED flag as you can get. I know where each and every title I have is, no exceptions. My wife knows where they are and if the office burns down or I don't show up after Thirsty Thursday, she knows where to go. Most lease owners hold the title, and I would slow your roll...This smells like a lease. Check with TX for a UCC-1 filing, also known as perfecting the lien. Typically, a commercial lender must perfect the lien with the state (your mileage may vary by state). Its an easy way to see if there is a lien holder in most states. You will most likely not see a lease with a UCC-1 search, as they do not perfect the lean because most leases (until 2016) were/are off balance sheet leases.

Your smeller is a little off on this one glockwise.. I can see your point in a typical scenario this would seem a bit fishy to me also but again I can assure it's not. This truck was not a lease buy. It was financed through a bank and then leased onto a company (dart). The previous owner divorced before dieing 4 years or so later so there was no wife to get the copy of the title either.. I've verified all this information. Called the bank the truck was financed through and got signed paperwork from them stating that the truck is paid for free and clear. Had to get this information before getting the bond for the the title as they required it.

" I'm thinking the first place was assuming I wanted to get plates that would allow for hauling a load as they never asked about how much the total weight would be."***---You would only need to know or place a stated weight if you wanted to plate the truck for less than 80k or full gross for your state.

Right, I'm not sure why they were asking me what the final weight would be? Doesn't really make sense..

"They also said I would need to get the truck inspected and get insurance going to them."---

You typically need insurance to plate a commercial vehicle. Inspection is typically not required except maybe in an RV situation where you would be subject to state inspections????

Well if I decide to sale it I would just get the title transferred over which hopefully won't require me to get insurance.

And you can not get an IRP plate without a stamped copy of the current 2290. You must pay $550 to the IRS (you will pay a pro-rated amount from 7/1/16). The buyer is responsible for any vehicle placed on the road for the current tax year. I would have to revisit a related party transfer to give you unofficial tax advise. But typically, the buyer is responsible for the current tax year and the previous owner can claim a credit. With a deceased owner... I would have to go to the big book.

Ok, thanks, I didn't know that.

Without a title, you're gonna have a hard time selling it or anything else, kinda like pushing a hay wagon up hill, good luck....

Right. Well I have a way to get the title and will be doing it shortly that's not going a problem. It will be a bonded title though so hope that won't cause any issues leasing it onto a company if I do decide to go that route.

No. I'm saying the tax is owed for the years it was not paid, but required.
I don't think the tax is due for years it was parked.

It never seems to change. People come on here looking for information because they have none. I suggest items to research and they complain that I didn't spell it out for them.

For future reference...If you're not the stupids ones, why did you just talk s#!t to a fleet owner with 30 years experience and a masters degree in accounting who was willing to give you free help?

    Good Luck

You seem like an angry person who has some issues. You would do well to just move on and not respond as I will keep responding to your answers and I have some experience also maybe not so much in trucking as you but in life in general. I have no ill will against you. My desire to get understanding of my situation is genuine. Why don't you give more input on the forms you want me to study if you have so much knowledge on the subject? Do you not type well or fast? That's fine if you don't I understand. You will continue to get more upset talking with me if your not genuinely concerned about really helping another trucker which sounds like your situation. You do not realize who you are arguing with and that's fine. Keep on and you will find out if that's your desire but don't say I didn't warn you.
