    Hello, New Member here.

I've been reading posts with interest and would like to get some opinions. We've been staying pre-emissions up to this point. We haul relatively local, pulling about 350 miles a day on a 7 day a week milk haul. We normally gross around 88k loaded.
We are looking at replacing a truck and just can't find anything decent anymore in pre-emission. We have it narrowed down to 2 options
Clean 2014 Freightliner Coronado 132 Glider Kit with 2004 spec S60 Detroit 195k miles
    or
Super clean 2010 Western Star 4900SB DD15 209k miles. This truck is 2011 emissions.

We can pick up the 2010 Western Star for about $13k less on total price with very few extra miles. Trucks are comparable in spec. I know history on both trucks and both have had relatively easy lives. I've seen reports on the 2014 Freightliner and it spent most of it's life in high gear on the road. As of yet haven't seen reports on the 2010 WS, but know the company.
So, to emission or not to emission, that is the question. I have absolutely no experience with the DD15. I have 4 S60's and am very happy with them. The EGR system on the 2004 is an easy delete to be completely emission free.

    I'd love to hear opinions.

If you don't haul to California then go with the glider. From reading these boards the 2013 or newer DD15 have a revised emissions and alot easier to diagnose problems.

If you want to learn just how complex the new emission system are vs the S60 look at this guys form.http://rawze.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?fid=38

It is for Cummins ISX but the DD15 has same setup. You can read how the system work and see why it so complicated.

I had DD15 emission box fail. The DOC filters failed or went bad. On the Detroit nobody seem to talk about how the DOC filters can not be changed. They are built into the emission box. So about 600,000 miles if they go bad or get dirty or the special coatings wear off. It's a $12,000 repair. Here the catch the DOC filters are in front of the DPF. So they system work by passing everything thru the DOC filters, soot and even fuel when regeneration driving down the road. So if you have a coolant leak and it going out the exhaust the coolant can mess up the DOC filters I believe

You should look into 2011 vs 2013 DEF system on freightliner. I think the 2011 were using air from air tanks to run the DEF pump or metering unit. The bad results were water and oil if in air tanks from not being drained . Then got pumped into the DEF system messing it up. So freightliner switched to an electric DEF pump in 2013 or something to solve this problem the 2011 and 2012 truck had.

    I dunno.
    My daily driver is a '08 Century with a 60 / 500HP/ 13 speed.
The Cascadia's I take for going on shuttle runs up the hill
( I-17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff ) will leave that 60 in the dust. I think our wrench has them set up though, and one is geared different than the others, but they will leave that 60 in the dust.
And that bit on 17 I'm referring to is basically 144 miles uphill with 3 good pulls.
    Usually 78 or 79K.

That year is like the worst year of the series 60. We had one and that thing would drop to 90km/h on the hill near belleville 401westbound. Broke rocker arm twice, got towed twice. All other detroits we've had been good we also have a 2011 columbia glider with 1.7millon kms she runs good, that would be my choice a glider

Stay away from the new tech engines and trucks as long as you can. Dealers are ready to sell you the latest & greatest but NO ONE will stand up for you when you start having problems and you WILL. The S60 engines are cheap to repair and rebuild. The DD13 & DD15 are not rebuilding friendly. Though they get great fuel mpg it all gets taken away & more with the problems they bring.

The Cascadia with the same S60 leaves the Centry in the dust?
