I have recently finished cdl school and signed on to work for the company for a year. We were told that no other company can hire us if we don't finish our year contract, is this possible? I understand that they are collecting the tuition payments throughout the year contract but is it really possible that another company couldn't hire me if they had a better position available? I know about being billed by the school for the money and the financial aspect of it but I'm curious if it's really possible that a company can say another company isn't allowed to hire their employee?
Are employment contracts the real deal?

You are free to go work anywhere you little heart desires. However you might have to pay this money back if you can't find another company to accept that contract.

Wow. Never heard of this level of servitude preparedness. Is this a phone conversation you're relaying or have you actually read the text of the "contract"?
We are not yet living in a nation where our futures our determined for us by government (or other entity) upon completion of grade school education.
Obligation to repay [by continued employment] a debt you agreed to take on? Yes. I can see this. But the idea that an entire industry will blackball you for breach of contract just doesn't fly.Last edited: Dec 24, 2016

It is indeed a possibility, I have heard of such things as a non competition clause. It is not uncommon with such things as one company buying out another and the principles in the to be bought company sign one which basically stops them from either starting or working for another company that would be in competition with the buying company. I have never heard of it as far a just a driving job, but it is indeed possible and legal if you decide to sign it.

No it isn't true.
They can not prevent you from getting employment with someone else. They can not threaten another employer for hiring nor can they tell you that you can not ply your skills at another job like if they have a no compete clause.
The bad thing is other companies will not hire out of ignorance, the laws have been clear, the courts have vacated contracts because of the abuse and most of the non-compete and repayment contracts are useless when it comes to this issue. -

Non compete clauses generally applies to high levels of professional positions and/or high levels of control or ownership in a similar company. I don't think a truck driver trade applies in such a clause. But if they are trying to say truck drivers are a highly valuable profession or are key executives of the corporation, maybe you need to reconsider your true value, and renegotiate your pay with said carrier.

No-compete clauses are designed to prevent am employee from leaving a company and taking proprietary info or design/processes to another company in the same industry or market segment. It also applies to salesmen (such as in the insurance industry) from taking company provided leads to another company selling similar services. Truck driver training is not proprietary info or knowledge, as it is virtually identical industry-wide. There is no way a no-compete clause for driver training could be legally inforced.
