It makes sense for them to look and see what the actual weather is. I'm sure there are drivers that call in as soon as they see a snow flake and claim its not safe. I would be looking to get rid of any driver working for me that abused the right to shut down.
I have only used it once. And not even for weather, no questions asked other than "why", and "what can you do?" Granted I'm an IC so maybe its different. But I have never heard any driver here say it was held against them.
What made you guys decide to work for Schneider?

Several things led to me starting with Schneider. Some main ones were that they seemed to be strictly business without many frills. Satellite dishes, funky decals and bumper guards are great but they don't make me anymore money. Schneider was just about the only mega that didn't send a recruiter to my school. For some reason that intrigued me. After going out and talking face to face with alot of random truck drivers, It seemed that Schneider was pretty well respected even for being a mega. I believed them more than anyone that they would actually get me home when they say they would and that has remained true. With a young wife and kids at home, I easnt going to be playing the hometime games that alot of companies seem to play. Also it was one of the only companies that promised I wouldn't be forced into an AMT. That one not so true but at least it wasn't immediate.
Also they had several options for drivers who don't want to do OTR. I knew I wanted to run dedicated but every company seemed to have the same accounts. Walmart, Target, Dollar stores etc. The IP account was different and had a smaller company feel that I was searching for even though schneider is such a big company. Oh yea, and there was no way in hell that I was living in a truck with a "mentor" for 2+ months.Last edited: Dec 23, 2016

Due to a 'clerical error's with the DMV over the one ticket that I've had 16 years, I was unemployable for 8 months and had lost my house. SNI had a decent safety record, a OC in my city, and they were nice.

At the time, they had a good training program, and decent equipment. Pay was more than I was making at my old job, though not nearly enough for the isolation and depression of 12 days on/2 days off. The only misstep I made in my career was wasting that third year at Schneider. Two was enough to get a decent job.

To many jars of corn and a lost bet!

No I'm kidding, when I first came to SNI back in 04', they had a good training program to train my wife so we could team, I was experienced and she wasn't and SNI gave her the way into SNI.
All these years later they still meet a need of mine albeit barely now but there's worse out their I guess.
I'm here still because I can dictate my hometime but that's getting harder to do and stay profitable.48Packard and Home_on_wheels Thank this. -
In 2007, I had been out of trucking for three years. I was in management in a different line of work, and I became highly disenchanted with it. Schneider told me if I could pass a road test they'd hire me as an experienced driver. I did and they did. Drove company van for about 4 1/2 years, then went to Crete. Spent three years there before coming into the Choice program two years ago.

I started with SWIFT, went through their training in Utah, pulled reefer for a while, was really disgusted with how I was treated. Then went a different route in trucking, then decided to go back to SWIFT, out on the road with the trainer for a refresher wasn't too bad, but then had to deal with the office people...F!!! it walked a way after 10 days of refresher, went tanker with Schneider a week later, now I wish I had started with Schneider. The DBLs, office staff and other drivers really make the company a good place to work, I actually like the idea of quarterly training (not the computer crap), but the drive around the block with a trainer, it will tighten up your shot group and a good way to get info on the happenings in the company.....(oh now on winter break, overseas enjoying the sun...)

When I was fresh out of CDL training, they hired me to run a dedicated account immediately. No one else here could offer me that. I liked my DBL and the other Schneider office folks I worked with every day. Eventually, I bought my first truck (now on my second) and run as an IC. Going into my 5th year with them, now, though no longer on my dedicated run.

Back in December 2015 TMC rejected me because I live too far from the interstate. I almost signed on with Roehl but they wanted a 70,000 mile commitment or I would be on the hook for their training, even though I obtained my license on my own. Schneider had an interesting offer with one of their regional dedicated accounts, which ended up being decent. Being both regional and dedicated took some of the sting out of having to go out on the road for my first year of trucking.
