    Hey guys,

first of all Merry Christmas to everyone.
Im a long time lurker but this is my first post and not a very good one!
So I broke down a few hours ago on the i77 just north of Columbia in SC.
I'm wondering if anyone knows of any trust worthy shops around here?
It's a 2000 volvo with a 12.7 S60 detroit. Some really bad sounds coming from the engine, couldnt even make it to the nearest truck stop which is a TA only 4miles away.
A friend knows a guy in Atlanta I could get it towed there and the tow would cost about $1200. Im thinking if theres any good detroit mechanics here I could save myself some money from the tow and put that towards the repairs.
Thanks in advance guys, be safe out there!

It slowly started running hot coolant temps, even with the engine fan on. I quickly checked oil temps and pressure and both were normal. Coolant started getting closer to 210 and i pulled over. Opened the reservoir cap slowly and lots of bubbles/pressure was coming out. Once it cooled down i started it up and it sounds like something is broken inside the motor, cant explain the sound but im afraid to stand next to it. Its not rod knock but it sure feels like a rod is gonna come flying out of the block. I dont know how this noise is related to the hot coolant temps, but would a bad headgasket cause it to run like it has no oil in it?
Oil lever is ok and black, cant see any coolant in oil either. Thinking of taking it to detroit diesel but I'm afraid they will just start tossing parts at it.

Sounds like head gasket, it will cause heating problems and odd noises.
Water pump could have gone south. Broken shaft or impeller can make a lot of noise.

I did forget to metnion after this happened it looked like the waterpump was leaking at that moment, but it stopped after cooling off.
If it is the headgasket, there is a good chance one or more liners dropped as well right?
One thing ive noticed is constant steam from the breather tube, even with the oil filler cap off white smoke could be seen once engine was warmed up. I was planning on getting it on the dyno after new years to measure blowby and see where its sitting power wise. But it went south on me rather quickly.

Currently dealing with a similar issues. None of us can say for sure without digging into your engine but it sounds like a head gasket and/or water pump to me. Most places have a 3-5 lead time before they can even look at a truck right now. There's a place called C&W in Savannah that has a labor rate of $85 but that's about 150 miles away from you. Sorry, I don't know of anyone in Columbia unfortunately. Call around and ask for places by word of mouth.

I also say Headgasket, not to sure about Liners until you pull the Head off.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, Im waiting for shops to open and start callinn around. I tried to start it to get it a bit more on the shoulder, and it seems like its seized up or something is broken. So its definitely more than a headgasket at this point. Now I'm thinking if its even worth it to throw money at this engine or if I should start thinking of a reman motor from detroit.

If you can get it to Jones and Sons in Kings Mountain, NC. Those guys are my go to shop. I use to stop in there just to say hi, develop that gooder relationship. Since Johnny passed away, I believe Steve is running the show. I've bobtail ed 600 miles to them before.

If you can get it up there I'd definitely let them do it.
