    I'l' second what @Ristow Said..
Speaking as someone who has spent a few years stirring one of those 8V71's (mostly at 90 odd thousand Pounds). I'd leave it alone..
you need to remember that those Gm's rev a fair bit freer than engines today do & also you've only 850-900 Ft lbs of torque as apposed to 16-1900 ft/lbs that Todays engines have...

Just relax & enjoy It for what It is.....

Nope, no turbo, Just the blower. I'd be quite content just being able to maintain a smooth 70-75mph on flat land. I run more midwest and southeast than anything, so It's not all the time that I deal with the higher limits in the west, or high mountain grades. But I sure wouldn't complain with having more than I need. With bed bugging I run light compared to freight and would be fine with more horse than torque, and the previous owner had the truck set up for the opposite. From the build sheet he added the light weight package and pretty much geared it to pulling heavy. From the conversation I had that's pretty much all he'd done with it. local/heavy equipment/farm/supply pull etc.

I did an eleven hour straight run with her home and she purred real fine at 70mph (bobtail of course) and had some peddle left, but I didn't want to push any more since I don't know her that well yet. Once I get a heavy load on her (heavy for me anyways) I'll have a better Idea about how she handles it and tops out. (And I'll definitely share it here) but I'm still thinking she might be reared lower than what might be practical for my uses. Of course, there's always the logical voice in the back of my head that's saying "you don't want to be a mover forever, HHG isn't getting any better, keep your equipment geared for an easy transition out." but....

I don't think that's quite realistic with a 318. Mine was a 8v92TAC with advanced cams and big injectors and I would have had the foot on the floor at all times to roll like that .

What size tires on that, how tall . 3.90-4.10 would probably be ideal but I would run it a while with the 4.33. You may wanna find s silver 92 rather than rears. If you really like the truck maybe a series 60 ;)

Yep, gotta' spin them ol' ring dings. Needle against the pin, we'd always say. If it was mine, newer 500 Detroit, 13, 2:55's, turn that ol' right lane truck into a left lane truck, 10- fo.:D

Sweet old truck. Even for an Astro. I hope you wear clean socks. With those big windshields everyone will see.

I wonder if he has the radiator room to cool a newer motor. The 2strokes are easy to cool.

Rather than re gear the rears I'd go with a newer double over 13. Then you get the easier shift of the low inertia tranny. Cheaper too.

Maybe the 318, but my w900 that came with a 435hp 8v92 has the same radiator as the 3408 and K series trucks.

Right, but just looking at the front of that Astro, it looks like a smallish rad and little room to go bigger.
