Break one-nine - Looking for some recommendations

    I'm getting ready to join ya'll as a new driver - waiting on my Grant to attend school for my CDL and have a job with a decent company (so many here have told me.)

    I'm now checking into Radio's and Antenna's so I'm ready to go on day 1 after completion of School.

    CB's were a hobby of mine several years ago and I ran mobile Cobras with a K40 on the end of my car. I also had a President Washington (VERY OLD) Base at home with a beautiful Brass Mic.

    With that said - what kind of trouble would I be in if I picked up a moded 2950? This was the top of the line, best of the best radio back in the day. Will I get in trouble at a weigh station if it's seen? I'm considering picking one up since it was the Radio of my Dreams many, many years ago. Than again - I was also the A-hole who ran a 250W footwarmer just to stomp on people - I was much younger than!!!!!!

    Here's what I'm considering:

    RCI-2950 (Conversion) with a Wilson 5000
    Cobra 29LTD with a Wilson 5000
    Galaxy 959 with a Wilson 5000
    Ranger TR966, again with a Wilson 5000

    I'm pretty much set on the Wilson 5000, but I am very open to criticism and suggestions.

    Please help me out!!!!

    Of the radios you listed I'd go with the RCI2950 or 2970 if you can find one. I used a Kenwood TS50 for years, I have no use for an AM, or AM/FM radio, I would only buy a true all mode radio. Since CB is mostly used on AM, I'd want an all mode radio that sounds good on AM. I have Yeasu FT100 and FT100D, the 100 works great on AM CB, but the 100D doesn't sound good on AM at all.

    Out of the list of you choice's I would go for the 2950. I am not a big fan of the Galaxy CB's, Love their 10 meter radios but not the CB. The Cobra 29 can be made to scream with a Mosfet final conversion and a good tune. They are very clean as far as audio goes too. Personally I would look at the Ranger SS158, They have great sounding audio and are reasonably priced. I'm a big fan of the duel final radio like the Galaxy 88/99 but the Connex 3300HP/General Lee which I personally think has the best sounding audio, can be had for about the same price as a good used 2950 or a 29 thats all done up. The good and bad of today's world is that there are a lot of great radio's to choose from. The Wilson 5000 will be hard to beat but don't forget to get some good quality coax to go with it, not the cheap truck stop kind.

    I have had all the radios you listed except the Ranger. I dont think you would be disapointed with any of the ones you have listed but I cant speak for the Ranger. Wilson ant. and good coax properly tuned and you will have a great setup. Good luck and stay safe.
