Took mine in Tennessee and it was 30 real simple questions. Maybe each state can write the test and make it more complicated or simple.

    Perhaps.

Here in MD they use a lot lf questions you'd swear have two right answers or are worded like "which of these is NOT..."

I don't want to hijack this thread but I've heard that some states they will allow you to combine the hazmat background check with the one needed to get a TWIC card. Is this true in most states? Does anybody know if it's true in Colorado? I'm on the road right now and it's impossible to actually speak to a human being at the CO dmv on the phone.

To the OP I don't know what the TDI program is like but maybe you should ask them?

NO the states have nothing to do with it, the feds do, they administer the TWIC program.

However my pet peeve with this entire thing fingerprint check crap is when do finger prints change, why should I get another set on renewal when I'm already in the system? Do a quick background check and that's it.

To the OP, I just recently went and renewed my CDL and re added Hazmat. Its best to get your TSA background check done first, then go get your endorsements. That way you re not making multiple trips to the DMV. If you apply for all of your endorsements and pass the Hazmat, you will not get the endorsement added until you show the TSA clearance

I'm hoping I don't have to do that again when I renew my concealed carry permits...

I got my CDL recently from an independent driving school and completed all my endorsements as soon as a I had my permit. Hazmat is the toughest one since you have to memorize a bunch of arbitrary information. Try to get this one out of the way asap since the TSA background check takes a while. I slowly read each the chapter twice, spun through a few practice tests on different sites other than the DMV site and the took them one at a time. It's easier to study for one test and take it the DMV than trying to remember everything at once. As long as you still are in the permit stage taking separate knowledge tests is free and when you get your license in the mail all your endorsements are on it.
However if you fail any of the knowledge tests 3 times your application is void and you get to start all over again including paying fees. But don't sweat it it's actually pretty easy overall.
I changed career from telecommunications to driving truck and love it. I work for a company in Stockton, CA that hauls steel on flatbeds like coils, rebar, I-beams etc. they trained me and it's all local NoCal hauls and I'm home every night.

You could go back, but you can test for any or all your endorsements when you take the general written test for your your permit or anytime in between.

Depends on the school and the state you are in. Each school handles things differently. You have to take a written test to get your CDL permit. Some schools require that before you get in the door. Other schools coach you through the permit test and the endorsements. Some don't give a crap weather you get any endorsements.

In WA state as well as others, you can take all your tests including hazmat in one sitting. The same re-testing rules apply to all failures, including hazmat.
