W900AOwner You beat me too it. I am no mechanic but I consider my self to be a common sense person. How can you measure crush on an item such as a seal. Then add expansion, contraction and pressure. The whole idea of that situation seems preposterous to me. I am however almost always open to learning something new. Please, I am not knocking either of the two who provided the info on the method. Keep in mind that at one time putting a tire on a rim without a tube seemed insane.

I don't even know what they are talking about an O/S. The liner seats on the counterbore, and the head gaskets seats on the liner

I don't see anything about an oversized seal being used to correct liner protrusion. Never seen counter bore/liner protrusion issues on a DD.

I just run my engine SN on eParts and I can see the regular cyl liner top seal p/n A0249974845 - TOP CYLINDER LINER SEALING and p/n A 0249974845-TOP CYLINDER LINER SEALING REPAIR SOLUTION <--could be that oversize seal. I am not sure this seal will correct protrusion but in fact this part is existing and its available for purchase .Last edited: Dec 31, 2016

There are two seals on the outside of the liner, but that has no effect on liner protrusion.

One of the reasons that the counterbores corrode, and get all pitted, is because they are not clamped tight enough. They are bouncing on the counterbore, causing the damage. I see it all of the time on 60 Series, Cat C15, Cummins ISX. When the liner protrusion is at the high side of the spec, it helps hold the fire ring in the head gasket tight, & prevents counterbore damage.W900AOwner Thanks this.

This is the most sensible response you'll get for this issue. And yes TEM, I agree with you're assumption that a .005 shim is a tough item to not only make, but if they did...how would it stay in place? I don't think anybody'd even consider cutting just .005.
Cummins has always been the most common one for dancing liners. But my old 3406B was a doozy too, thanks to lazy mechanics back in the day never checking them properly. Those aluminum spacer plates were a PITA back then too.
