I wouldn't say it's good but then again I don't have much experience so I figure I gotta take what I can get for a bit...

I've hauled guard rails from the factory in NY to VA. Don't understand why they had to be tarped. They're unloaded in the rain and dumped in a muddy field.

The good money is foodservice is you want lots of hometime. Hard work though.Danch Thanks this.

I did regional/otr dry bulk for one of the cheapest companies in PA for two years. I averaged around 1100 a week there. Had a lot of fun doing it too. I averaged $.50 a mile or so.
But..
They paid by the load, and detention after two hours. If you're only paid by the mile, that might hurt some.
Is this dry bulk tanker work? Hauling cement, fly ash, or lime? Because if it is, you will have slow times in the winter. And the summer will be very busy.
All that aside, it will open doors to better work if you keep out of trouble. I was very green when I started that job. And it was quite a learning curve. Although my trainer was awesome, and we're still friends nearly ten years later, there was a bunch I learned on the fly. As I said, I was there two years, no accidents, no tickets, and made decent money. I then went to a smaller local company, I'm home every day, (I run at night), and average 1200 a week. I average roughly $.60 a mile.
Just some food for thought...Danch Thanks this. -
Yea just came from that I'm looking into a different field of trucking

Hazmat/tankers is good; even some food grade such as Bulkmatic.Danch Thanks this.

Not bad so with the 60 cent a mile situation are you still being payed by the load? What was fun about it for you? What was your hometime like doing regional/otr? About how many miles did you get?
It's hauling all types of chemicals and dry materials no food though. Yea they said something about it being slow in winter but them having alot of hazmat loads and loads a bit far from the terminal 2-3 day round trips. -
Yeah I'm paid by the load, however with this company I get nothing for detention, or unloading. But I rarely sit. And the unloads are generally less than one hour.
With the last company, the regional deal, the unloads were longer, but anything over two hours was hourly. I ran between 2500-3000 miles a week. Generally home on weekends
The fun part? Watching the knuckleheads I worked with perform. That company would hire anyone with a pulse. And it made for lots of free entertainment. That and going new places. I really enjoyed going to different parts of the country. I was like a tourist/#####. But that's another story... -
Also can you give a brief runthru what was your average day like doing dry bulk...?
-
I can, but it'll be a little bit, I just finished unloading, gotta run.
Danch Thanks this.
