Following some recent posts in another thread it might be a good idea to start a thread about the experiences people have had with their gliders.

I would think any glider would be better than the junk they make now. I wish my current company had the sense to buy them. We've had a ton of trucks go down in the last couple of weeks, including mine. My dispatcher has 25 trucks, and 11 either broke down or went to the shop for major problems in one week. Ouch...

I like my Mack, but I miss the Coronado glider I used to drive. I was just looking at Fitzgerald's website earlier. I didn't realize you could get Kenworth gliders. They even have W900L ICON gliders. About makes a guy sick knowing his company could've had their pick of Western Star 4900s, Kenworth T800s & W900s, Peterbilt 389s, and Freightliner Coronados, but instead they buy Tier 4 Mack Pinnacles and Freightliner Cascadias...

Personally, I would get a factory powered glider then add the trans and rears.

I've generally heard positive things about Fitzgerald. Same thing with Harrison. Some guys have problems, but it is nothing like the new stuff. You could put a down payment on a glider with all the money they have spent on my Mack in the last few weeks.

This is my biggest annoyance right here. The Emissions systems are total crap. The only trucks I look for now are pre-emission. However, most have 700K - 1.2M with no overhauls. Doesn't sound like a smart buy.

I hear you there. If I was the motive power head at any truck company right now, I would be buying every last glider the budget would allow, before they ban them completely. I would even go scouring around for any of the old stuff I could find that looked halfway decent.

I drive a 400 series truck, #408. I see some 300s and occasionally some 200s. 100s are dinosaurs in my company. Last winter, I rolled up to a stop in Wisconsin and did a double take. There was an old white Mack Vision sitting there; it was an old 100 series truck. The old guy driving it was a super cool dude. I think he was like 72 years old, so it was kinda funny that the guy who might be the oldest driver in our company was driving one of the oldest trucks.

We stood and talked for a little bit. He told me that his truck was the last 500hp, 13spd Vision left on the roster. He was pretty proud of that. His truck had 1,600,000+ miles on it. My jaw hit the floor when he told me that. She was a really reliable truck, too. It had never needed any major work the whole time he had been running it, and that had been quite awhile.

They kept threatening to trade it in, and the old man told them that he would retire rather than start driving something new. I have never seen him or that truck since. They probably got rid of it finally. It makes me wish we had kept those old Visions and rebuilt them, especially the 500hp ones. We still have some left, but not the good ones. I ran #156 briefly for a loaner, but it was governed at 62mph and only had a 9spd. I'm so used to 13s that I can't stand driving 9s; I keep trying to split gears I don't have lol!

You would think that would be the case, but I wouldn't count on it. I hope I am wrong, but whole idiotic green movement has so much momentum going for it, that it is going to be very hard to slow it down, let alone stop anything and reverse it. All it is is communism rebadged in an eco-friendly wrapper, just one of many ways they are pushing towards global government. It is all about absolute power and control. It has nothing to do with saving the planet.
