I got a load out of Lathrop with a drop in SLO, one in Bakersfield, and one in LA. It was something like 25 stacks of drywall spread between 2 brands.
I got to SLO 20 minutes early and checked in with shipping, and the manager looked up from her newspaper long enough to tell me to go out and wait in the truck until they were "ready". Eventually I get backed in and after about 20 minutes I wonder why they haven't started unloading yet. After about 30 minutes, the empress comes back out and asks me if I know which stacks are hers. I tell her they're all generic and she should just take out 5 blue and 3 green. After about an hour (still haven't felt the forklift go in once) she waddles out again and says she's refusing the load because she can't find "her" stacks. I explain again that they're all the same and she should just grab what she wants, and she goes back in. 15 minutes after THAT, she says she won't unload me because "her" stacks are behind two other stacks and she "doesn't have time" to move them out of the way. (Time wasted so far: 75 minutes) At this point I am late for my 2nd drop.
I call it in, my DM reschedules the next drop and files the refusal claim, and tells me to just get to the next stop when I can. I get about 10 minutes down the road when I get a call from customer service telling me to stop where I am and wait, because the shipper was refusing the refusal, and might force the empress to unload me. I sit there an hour (detention pay has kicked in at this point) and, indeed, I am directed to return to the store where they will unload me.
I roll up to their dock again, and they spend a good 10 minutes pissing and moaning about how much extra work they have to do now, and I just toss the bills on the shipping desk and go wait in the cab. About 15 minutes of actual work later, and they have their 8 stacks of drywall. 5 hours after the scheduled unload and I'm out of there, richer by $48 for doing essentially nothing. God knows what swift billed them for making me late for the next stop. :d

This wasn't one of those "Americanized" California mamasitas was it? I've many BAD experiences with these types. They are lazier than molasses in Minnesota during January.

I have delivered many many flatbed loads to Home Depot all over the west. As soon as there is a problem like yours developing, I head right to the front of the store to the service desk and ask for the manager. Tell them when your appointment was, when you arrived and what is going on. Usually the forklift is at the truck before I get back there. I always make my own appointments and if I get delayed I call to let them know.

Don't know what the heck their big problem is in their receiving. There are three stores that I used to deliver to. All three of them were PITA most of the time.
And here I thought it was their job to receive freight in the back so that it could be sold out the front, so that they could keep their jobs. Foolish me. . .

Often people in the receiving department try to be important, they are part of a system and she or he has a boss. Don't be shy if you have an appointment you win push your paperwork under the nose of people higher up. The most important thing to remember always is.

Eh, I knew from the moment she tried to tell me her stuff wasn't there when I could see it was that she was just screwing me around. I figured Swift would back me up (and to their credit they did) so I decided it was an excellent opportunity for some detention pay. Not my best no-work earnings ever (about to post THAT thread, too) but a good one.
